About Septoplasty

Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon makes a cut inside the nose, lifts the lining and reshapes or removes the bent cartilage and bone, then repositions the lining. There are no external cuts, and the outside shape of the nose does not change. Soft splints or packing may be placed for a few days. It typically takes forty-five minutes to an hour and a half.

Most people breathe more freely through the nose afterwards, though results depend on other causes of blockage, such as swollen turbinates or allergy, which may need treating as well. The septum can occasionally bend again. Risks include bleeding, a hole in the septum and numbness of the upper teeth. Skill of the surgeon influences how well the airway improves.

It is usually a day case or one night. Swelling and congestion last one to two weeks, and splints come out after about a week. Avoid heavy exercise and nose-blowing, and use saline rinses as advised. Bring any CT scans and allergy history, and arrange a follow-up with an ENT doctor at home.

Usually a good fit if

  • Persistent nasal blockage due to a deviated septum.
  • Recurrent nosebleeds or sinus issues linked to septal deviation.
  • Snoring or sleep disturbance from nasal obstruction.
  • Symptoms not controlled by sprays or medicines.

May need to wait if

  • Blockage caused mainly by allergy or swollen lining rather than structure.
  • Bleeding disorders or blood thinners not reviewed by your doctor.
  • Active nasal or sinus infection.
  • Wanting to change the outer shape of the nose, which needs rhinoplasty.
How to prepare
  1. Bring any CT scan or previous reports and note your symptoms and nasal sprays tried.
  2. Tell the team about blood thinners, aspirin and herbal medicines; changes are on your doctor's instruction.
  3. Follow fasting instructions for general anaesthesia.
  4. Plan saline spray and rest, and avoid flying until cleared.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Is the septum the main cause of my blockage?
  2. Will turbinate reduction be needed too?
  3. Will you use splints or packing?
  4. What are the risks of septal perforation or changes in nose shape?
  5. What aftercare can I do at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • No nasal examination or endoscopy before surgery.
  • Surgery is advised for cosmetic changes without discussing rhinoplasty.
  • Risks like septal perforation are not discussed.
  • No aftercare instructions are given.

Questions about Septoplasty abroad

Which country is cheapest for Septoplasty?

The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($2,900), Thailand ($3,300), Turkey ($3,895), out of 9 countries we compare.

How long will I stay in hospital for Septoplasty?

Most patients spend about 1 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 14 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.

Will the shape of my nose change?

Septoplasty works inside the nose and should not change the outside shape. Combined rhinoplasty is a separate operation.

Is it painful?

There is pressure and blockage rather than strong pain. Pain relief is usually enough.

Will I get a perforation?

It is a rare risk. Your surgeon will explain how it is lowered and what to watch for.
