About Balloon Sinuplasty
A thin guide wire and balloon catheter are passed through the nose into the blocked sinus passage, often with an endoscope or imaging for guidance. The balloon is inflated to widen the opening and then removed, and the sinus is usually flushed. No tissue or bone is cut in the standard technique. It can be done under local or general anaesthesia and is sometimes combined with other nose surgery.
Many people notice less pressure, congestion and fewer infections within weeks. It works best for blocked frontal, maxillary or sphenoid sinus openings and suits patients with limited disease. It is less suitable for polyps or extensive disease, where traditional endoscopic surgery may be better. Results depend on the underlying cause, allergies and your continued nasal care.
The procedure is often done as a day case, and most people can fly home within a day or two once cleared by the surgeon. Mild congestion and bloody discharge are common for several days. Bring your CT scan, plan to use saline rinses and prescribed sprays, and arrange follow-up with a local ENT doctor.
Usually a good fit if
- Chronic sinusitis in the frontal, maxillary or sphenoid sinus with confirmed blockage on CT.
- Symptoms that persist despite adequate medical treatment.
- Recurrent acute sinusitis with blocked sinus drainage.
- People who prefer a tissue-sparing option and have suitable anatomy.
May need to wait if
- Extensive nasal polyps, which often need other surgery.
- Severe deviated septum or anatomy that needs a different operation.
- No CT evidence of sinus blockage.
- Active infection needing treatment first, or poorly controlled allergy.
How to prepare
- Bring your CT scan of the sinuses and previous reports; the surgeon needs these to plan the procedure.
- Tell the team about blood thinners and allergies; medicine changes are on your doctor's instruction.
- Follow fasting instructions if sedation or general anaesthesia is planned.
- Arrange saline rinse supplies and plan a few days of rest before flying.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Does my CT show blockage that balloon dilation can treat?
- Which sinuses will be treated and will anything else be needed, such as septal surgery?
- Will it be done under local or general anaesthesia?
- What is the chance I will need further surgery, and how is it judged?
- What follow-up care and rinses can I continue at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No CT scan is reviewed before recommending the procedure.
- It is promised as a cure for all sinus problems.
- The surgeon does not discuss other options such as FESS.
- No plan for post-procedure care or review.
Questions about Balloon Sinuplasty abroad
Which country is cheapest for Balloon Sinuplasty?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($3,400), Thailand ($4,268), Turkey ($4,743), out of 9 countries we compare.
Is it less invasive than FESS?
It avoids removing tissue and usually has a quicker recovery, but it is only suitable for selected cases. FESS is better for polyps and complex anatomy.
Is it painful?
Local anaesthesia or sedation is used. Afterwards you may feel pressure and congestion rather than strong pain.
Will my sinusitis come back?
Many people improve, but chronic sinusitis can recur because allergy and inflammation still need to be managed. Medical treatment often continues after the procedure.
