About Mastoidectomy

Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon makes a cut behind or just in front of the ear and drills out the infected bone and skin growth, using a microscope. In a canal wall up approach the ear canal wall is preserved, while canal wall down creates a larger open cavity. The eardrum or hearing bones are sometimes repaired in the same operation or at a later stage.

The main aim is a dry, safe ear and clearing disease, not necessarily better hearing, although hearing may improve if reconstruction is done. Outcomes depend on how extensive the disease is, the technique, and surgeon experience. Cholesteatoma can recur, so long-term follow-up matters. Risks include dizziness, taste change, hearing loss and, rarely, facial nerve injury.

Expect two nights in hospital, a dressing over the ear, and several weeks of limited activity with the ear kept dry. Plan to stay for the first review at about one to two weeks. Bring your CT scans and hearing tests, and arrange regular ear checks with a local ENT doctor, sometimes for years.

Usually a good fit if

  • Chronic ear infection with discharge not controlled by medicines.
  • Cholesteatoma or suspected cholesteatoma.
  • Mastoiditis that fails to respond to antibiotics or has complications.
  • Disease that needs to be removed before reconstructing the eardrum or hearing bones.

May need to wait if

  • Active severe general illness or uncontrolled diabetes needing optimisation.
  • Disease only in the ear canal or middle ear that needs a smaller operation.
  • Unreviewed bleeding problems or blood thinners.
  • Only ear which hears, where risk must be carefully discussed.
How to prepare
  1. Bring your ear scans, hearing tests and details of infections or discharge.
  2. Tell the team about medicines, allergies and blood thinners; changes are on your doctor's instruction.
  3. Follow fasting instructions for general anaesthesia and avoid water in the ear beforehand.
  4. Plan time off, because flying and water exposure need clearance after surgery.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Do I need a canal wall-up or canal wall-down technique, and why?
  2. Will hearing repair be done at the same time?
  3. What are the risks to hearing, facial nerve and balance?
  4. How long until my ear is dry and safe for water or flying?
  5. What follow-up scans or ear cleaning can I have at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • No CT or hearing test is done before surgery.
  • The surgeon does not discuss the facial nerve or hearing risks.
  • No microscope or facial nerve monitoring is available.
  • No follow-up plan for cholesteatoma recurrence.

Questions about Mastoidectomy abroad

Which country is cheapest for Mastoidectomy?

The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($6,743), Thailand ($7,948), Turkey ($9,743), out of 9 countries we compare.

How long will I stay in hospital for Mastoidectomy?

Most patients spend about 2 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 28 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.

Will my hearing improve?

Surgery aims to remove disease and make the ear safe, not always to improve hearing. Hearing repair can sometimes follow at the same or a later operation.

Can I wash my hair?

Keep the ear dry until your surgeon says it has healed, using a cotton plug with petroleum jelly or a shower cap.

Can cholesteatoma return?

Yes, it can recur, so regular follow-up and sometimes MRI scans are used to detect it early.
