About Septoplasty
Septoplasty straightens a deviated nasal septum, the wall dividing the two sides of the nose. It is for people with long-term blockage, snoring or recurrent nosebleeds caused by the bend.
Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon makes a cut inside the nose, lifts the lining and reshapes or removes the bent cartilage and bone, then repositions the lining. There are no external cuts, and the outside shape of the nose does not change. Soft splints or packing may be placed for a few days. It typically takes forty-five minutes to an hour and a half.
Usually a good fit if
- Persistent nasal blockage due to a deviated septum.
- Recurrent nosebleeds or sinus issues linked to septal deviation.
- Snoring or sleep disturbance from nasal obstruction.
- Symptoms not controlled by sprays or medicines.
May need to wait if
- Blockage caused mainly by allergy or swollen lining rather than structure.
- Bleeding disorders or blood thinners not reviewed by your doctor.
- Active nasal or sinus infection.
- Wanting to change the outer shape of the nose, which needs rhinoplasty.
How to prepare
- Bring any CT scan or previous reports and note your symptoms and nasal sprays tried.
- Tell the team about blood thinners, aspirin and herbal medicines; changes are on your doctor's instruction.
- Follow fasting instructions for general anaesthesia.
- Plan saline spray and rest, and avoid flying until cleared.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is the septum the main cause of my blockage?
- Will turbinate reduction be needed too?
- Will you use splints or packing?
- What are the risks of septal perforation or changes in nose shape?
- What aftercare can I do at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No nasal examination or endoscopy before surgery.
- Surgery is advised for cosmetic changes without discussing rhinoplasty.
- Risks like septal perforation are not discussed.
- No aftercare instructions are given.
