About Hemithyroidectomy

Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon makes a cut of a few centimetres in a natural skin crease at the front of the neck and removes one lobe, taking care to protect the voice nerve and the parathyroid glands. The tissue is sent to pathology. Some centres use nerve monitoring, and a drain is sometimes placed for a day.

Often the remaining lobe makes enough thyroid hormone, so many people do not need lifelong tablets, although a minority do. Pathology confirms the diagnosis, and if cancer is found, further surgery may be advised. Voice change and low calcium are uncommon with one-sided surgery, and the neck scar fades over months. Outcomes depend on surgeon experience and the underlying condition.

Expect one to two nights in hospital and a few weeks before strenuous activity. Plan to remain until pathology results are available if possible. Bring your ultrasound and biopsy reports and thyroid blood tests, and arrange hormone blood checks at home about six to eight weeks after surgery.

Usually a good fit if

  • A single thyroid nodule that is suspicious or indeterminate on biopsy.
  • A one-sided goitre causing pressure or swallowing symptoms.
  • Small low-risk thyroid cancer in one lobe, where a lobectomy is appropriate.
  • A toxic nodule in one lobe not suitable for other treatment.

May need to wait if

  • Disease in both lobes, which usually requires total thyroidectomy.
  • Larger or aggressive cancer needing a more extensive operation.
  • Unmanaged thyroid overactivity that must be controlled first.
  • Bleeding disorders or blood thinners not reviewed by your doctor.
How to prepare
  1. Have thyroid blood tests, neck ultrasound and any fine-needle biopsy results available.
  2. Tell the team about blood thinners and other medicines; changes are on your doctor's instruction.
  3. Have your vocal cords checked if you have a hoarse voice or previous neck surgery.
  4. Follow fasting instructions and plan to stay near the hospital until the drain and wound are checked.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Is lobectomy enough for my condition or might I need more surgery later?
  2. Will you use nerve monitoring to protect my voice?
  3. What are the chances I will need thyroid tablets afterwards?
  4. When will I get the pathology result and what will happen if it is cancer?
  5. Who can monitor my thyroid blood tests at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • No ultrasound or biopsy is done before surgery.
  • The surgeon is not experienced in thyroid surgery or nerve monitoring.
  • The risk to voice and calcium levels is not discussed.
  • No clear plan for follow-up thyroid blood tests.

Questions about Hemithyroidectomy abroad

Which country is cheapest for Hemithyroidectomy?

The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($3,945), Thailand ($4,810), Turkey ($5,728), out of 9 countries we compare.

How long will I stay in hospital for Hemithyroidectomy?

Most patients spend about 2 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 14 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.

Will I need thyroid tablets?

Many people keep normal function with the remaining lobe, but some need replacement. Blood tests at six to eight weeks decide this.

Will it affect my voice?

A temporary hoarse or weak voice is possible. Permanent change is uncommon, and nerve monitoring helps lower risk.

Will I have a visible scar?

A neck scar remains but typically fades to a thin line within months, especially when placed in a natural skin crease.
