About Adenoidectomy
The operation is done under general anaesthesia through the mouth, with no external cut. The surgeon removes the adenoid tissue using a curette, a powered shaver or a coblation or cautery device, often with an endoscope to see the area clearly. It takes around twenty to thirty minutes. Adenoids are sometimes removed together with grommets or the tonsils, depending on the child's problem.
Most children breathe more easily through the nose, snore less and have fewer ear and sinus infections afterwards. Success depends on whether the adenoids were the real cause of symptoms, as allergies and other nose problems can persist. Regrowth of the adenoids is uncommon but possible, especially in very young children. Bleeding is the main risk and is infrequent.
Children usually go home the same day or after one night, and rest for several days before returning to school, with about a week for full recovery. Bring your child's medical history and any hearing tests. Keep to the surgeon's advice on pain relief and diet, and watch for fever or bleeding. A follow-up with a local ENT doctor is wise.
Usually a good fit if
- Persistent blocked nose, mouth breathing or snoring from enlarged adenoids.
- Repeated middle-ear infections or fluid, sometimes with grommets.
- Recurrent sinus or nasal infections not helped by medicine.
- Sleep-disordered breathing confirmed by assessment.
May need to wait if
- A bleeding disorder or abnormal clotting that has not been assessed.
- A cleft palate or submucous cleft, where removal may affect speech.
- Active infection or fever, which usually means waiting.
- Symptoms caused by allergy that could improve with medical treatment.
How to prepare
- The doctor will review your child's sleep, ear history and any bleeding problems, and may order blood tests.
- Follow fasting times given for food, milk and clear fluids before general anaesthesia.
- Tell the team about allergies, medicines and recent colds or fever; do not stop any medicine unless your doctor says so.
- Plan a quiet recovery, soft food and a few days away from school.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Are the adenoids the cause of my child's symptoms, and have other causes been checked?
- Which technique do you use and how is bleeding controlled?
- Will tonsils or grommets be done at the same time?
- How long should my child stay in the area, and when can they fly?
- What bleeding or fever should prompt urgent care at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Surgery is advised without an examination or nasal endoscopy.
- No check for bleeding problems or cleft palate.
- No paediatric anaesthesia expertise is available.
- No advice is given on bleeding signs or emergency contact.
Questions about Adenoidectomy abroad
Which country is cheapest for Adenoidectomy?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($2,063), Thailand ($2,438), Turkey ($2,678), out of 9 countries we compare.
How long will I stay in hospital for Adenoidectomy?
Most patients spend about 1 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 7 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
Will the adenoids grow back?
Small remnants can regrow, especially in young children, but this is uncommon. Symptoms returning later may have another cause, such as allergy.
Does my child need a hospital stay?
Usually only a few hours or overnight observation. A longer stay is considered in young children or when there are other conditions.
Does it affect immunity?
Adenoids are only part of the immune system, and removal does not cause a noticeable reduction in immunity in children.
