What Bilateral Total Hip Replacement patients say

★★★★★ Hip replacement, back to surfing
Melbourne waiting list was 9 months. Flew to Bangkok, tier-1 DePuy Attune. Six-week physio included in the package. Surfing again at week 10. Total cost was half the out-of-pocket quote at home.
Samuel Lee, Australia · Bumrungrad International Verified
★★★★★ Hip replacement at Medanta — anterior approach, 5 days
Right hip osteoarthritis. Polish quote was reasonable but the surgeon did posterior approach. Medanta Gurgaon offered direct anterior approach (faster recovery). Surgery 90 minutes, walking same day, discharged day 5. Back to office work…

About Bilateral Total Hip Replacement

In each hip the surgeon removes the damaged ball of the thigh bone and the worn socket surface, and fits a new ball and socket of metal, ceramic or plastic. Spinal or general anaesthesia may be used. Both hips can be done in one session or a few weeks to months apart. Staging is often chosen when health is a concern.

Most people get substantial pain relief and better mobility. Results depend on bone quality, weight, general health and surgeon experience. Doing both hips together increases blood loss and strain on the body compared with one, so it is mainly for fit patients, and clot prevention is especially important.

Expect around a week in hospital for a simultaneous operation, with early walking supported by physiotherapy. Plan about two to three weeks near the surgeon, and avoid long flights for several weeks. You will need help at home and crutches or frames, so arrange care and a physiotherapist before leaving.

Usually a good fit if

  • Severe arthritis, avascular necrosis or damage in both hips with pain and loss of function.
  • Fit enough for a larger operation if done together.
  • Failed non-surgical treatments.
  • Motivated for rehabilitation.

May need to wait if

  • Heart, lung or kidney disease that makes simultaneous surgery risky.
  • Active infection or poorly controlled diabetes.
  • Frailty, where staged surgery is safer.
  • Severe bone loss or deformity needing special implants.
How to prepare
  1. Have X-rays of both hips and the pelvis, plus heart and lung assessments if simultaneous surgery is planned.
  2. Review all medicines, including blood thinners, with your doctor; do not change them yourself.
  3. Treat dental problems and skin infections, and control diabetes and blood pressure before surgery.
  4. Prepare your home with raised seats and rails, and arrange help.
  5. Ask about clot prevention and fitness to fly.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Should both hips be done together or in stages?
  2. Which approach and implants will you use and why?
  3. How many bilateral hip replacements do you do and what are the results?
  4. What clot and infection prevention will I have?
  5. What movement precautions apply?
  6. What physiotherapy can I do at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Offering simultaneous surgery without heart and lung assessment.
  • No clot prevention plan.
  • No discussion of staging.
  • No rehabilitation or follow-up plan.
