What Revision Total Knee Replacement patients say

About Revision Total Knee Replacement
The surgeon takes out the old components, then rebuilds the knee using implants with longer stems, wedges or metal blocks to make up for lost bone. Some revisions replace only one part, while others replace everything. If infection is the reason, the work is often split into two operations with an antibiotic spacer in between and weeks of treatment.
Revision usually improves pain and stability, but outcomes are generally less predictable than a first knee replacement and range of movement can remain limited. Results depend on the cause of failure, bone and ligament quality, any infection, your weight and the surgeon's revision experience. Stiffness, infection and repeat loosening are the main concerns.
Plan on about a week in hospital and intensive physiotherapy from the first day. Stay near the hospital until the wound has healed and your bending is progressing, and discuss clot prevention before flying. Bring the original operation record, implant details, recent blood tests and imaging, and arrange physiotherapy at home.
Usually a good fit if
- Painful loosening, wear or instability of a knee implant on examination and X-ray.
- Joint infection confirmed or strongly suspected.
- Stiffness that has not responded to physiotherapy or manipulation.
- Fracture around the implant or malposition of components.
May need to wait if
- Pain with no identified implant cause, which may arise from the hip, spine or nerves.
- Active infection in another part of the body.
- Unstable heart or lung disease needing optimisation.
- Poor skin or soft tissue cover, which may need a plastic surgeon first.
How to prepare
- Bring your original operative notes and implant details; the surgeon needs them to plan removal.
- Expect X-rays, possibly CT, blood tests for infection markers and sometimes aspiration of the joint.
- Ask your doctor about blood thinners, diabetes and immune-suppressing medicines to review.
- Treat dental, urinary and skin infections before surgery.
- Arrange crutches or a walker and help at home, and discuss fitness to fly with the team.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- What is causing my knee to fail, and have infection and other causes been excluded?
- Can you identify my current implant and have the correct revision system available?
- Will it be a one-stage or two-stage operation?
- What bone loss do you expect, and how will you rebuild it?
- How many revision knee operations do you do annually, and what are the risks of stiffness and re-revision?
- What follow-up and physiotherapy can be arranged back home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Revision proposed without investigation for infection.
- The hospital lacks augments, stems or constrained implants for revision.
- No blood bank, intensive care or infection specialist support.
- The surgeon cannot say which revision implant system will be used.
Questions about Revision Total Knee Replacement abroad
Which country is cheapest for Revision Total Knee Replacement?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($18,213), Thailand ($22,320), Turkey ($26,905), out of 9 countries we compare.
How long will I stay in hospital for Revision Total Knee Replacement?
Most patients spend about 6 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 180 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
Is revision knee surgery as successful as the first replacement?
Many people improve, but results are generally less predictable than for a first knee replacement, and complications such as stiffness and infection are more common.
Will I need a staged operation?
If infection is the cause, two stages are common: remove the implant and place an antibiotic spacer, then insert a new implant later. Your surgeon will explain.
How long will the new implant last?
Revision implants can last many years, but durability tends to be shorter than first-time implants. It depends on bone, activity and weight.
Can I fly home after revision?
Flying is usually delayed for a few weeks to reduce clot risk and allow safe walking. Your surgeon will confirm.
