What Robotic Total Knee Replacement (Mako) patients say

About Robotic Total Knee Replacement (Mako)
The system builds a three-dimensional plan of your knee, usually from a CT scan, and lets the surgeon fine-tune implant size, position and ligament balance before cutting. During surgery the robotic arm keeps the saw within the planned limits while the surgeon remains in control. Both the thigh and shin surfaces are replaced with metal and plastic components.
Most people have much less pain and better mobility, similar to conventional total knee replacement. Robotic guidance improves the accuracy of implant positioning, though whether that translates into better long-term function is still being studied. Results depend on pre-operation stiffness, weight, general health, the surgeon's experience and how consistently you do physiotherapy.
Allow about a week to ten days near the hospital for wound checks and early rehabilitation. Check whether a pre-operative scan is needed in advance, bring your X-rays and medicines list, and discuss clot prevention before your flight. Organise physiotherapy and a follow-up appointment at home, and expect to avoid driving for several weeks.
Usually a good fit if
- Advanced arthritis in two or three compartments of the knee with pain on walking and at night.
- Daily activities limited despite physiotherapy, medication and injections.
- Knee deformity, such as bow-legs or knock-knees, suitable for correction by a robotic plan.
- General health good enough for anaesthesia and rehabilitation.
May need to wait if
- Active infection in the knee or elsewhere in the body.
- Uncontrolled diabetes, heart disease or other conditions that need optimisation.
- Poor leg circulation or very weak thigh muscles.
- Mild arthritis that could still respond to non-surgical care.
How to prepare
- Bring knee X-rays and any previous knee surgery notes; you may need a CT scan for planning.
- Ask your doctor about blood thinners, anti-inflammatories and diabetes medicines to review before surgery.
- Complete blood tests, ECG and an anaesthetic review; treat dental, skin and urinary infections first.
- Strengthen the thigh muscles with physiotherapy if your surgeon advises.
- Arrange crutches, home help and a plan for flying home after surgery.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Which robotic system do you use, and is a CT scan necessary?
- How many robotic total knees have you done, and what is the difference from your conventional results?
- Which implant is used, and is it a standard or a personalised alignment?
- Will I have a tourniquet, a drain or a nerve block?
- How soon can I walk, drive and fly?
- Who can review my knee and my X-rays when I am back home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Promises of a perfect or pain-free knee because a robot was used.
- The surgeon cannot show experience with the robotic system.
- No details of implant brand or model in writing.
- No physiotherapy or clot prevention plan.
Questions about Robotic Total Knee Replacement (Mako) abroad
Which country is cheapest for Robotic Total Knee Replacement (Mako)?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($14,393), Thailand ($16,793), Turkey ($18,883), out of 9 countries we compare.
How long will I stay in hospital for Robotic Total Knee Replacement (Mako)?
Most patients spend about 4 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 90 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
Does the robot perform the surgery?
No. The surgeon controls the robotic arm throughout. The robot helps keep bone cuts within a pre-planned area, but it does not operate independently.
Is recovery faster with a robot?
Some people notice less early swelling and pain, but evidence of quicker long-term recovery is mixed. Rehabilitation effort matters most.
How soon can I fly home?
Many surgeons clear flying after two to four weeks if you walk safely and use clot prevention. Your surgeon will confirm timing.
How long will a robotic knee last?
Like conventional implants, modern knee replacements often last 15 to 20 years or longer. Longevity depends on activity, weight and implant type.
