About Wrist Arthroscopy
After a regional or general anaesthetic, a tourniquet is applied and the hand is held in traction. The surgeon inserts a camera and small instruments through cuts of a few millimetres to look at the ligaments and cartilage. Common uses include treating TFCC tears, scapholunate ligament injuries, ganglion cysts and removing loose tissue, and it is also used to check a diagnosis when scans are unclear.
Results depend on what is found and treated. Tidying a TFCC tear or removing a cyst often brings good relief, while ligament injuries and arthritis are less predictable. Age, the cause of pain, how long symptoms have been present and the surgeon's experience all matter. Stiffness and nerve irritation are possible, and some pain can persist.
Many people go home the same day or after one night. Plan to remain for a wound check, usually within a week, and expect a splint for one to several weeks depending on what was done. Bring your MRI and X-ray reports, arrange hand therapy at home, and avoid driving and heavy gripping until your surgeon agrees.
Usually a good fit if
- Persistent wrist pain, clicking or weakness not explained by X-rays and not helped by splinting or injections.
- A suspected triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) tear or ligament injury.
- Ganglion cyst or loose fragments causing pain.
- Need for diagnosis when MRI is inconclusive.
May need to wait if
- Active infection or skin problems around the wrist.
- Advanced wrist arthritis, where arthroscopy is unlikely to help.
- Symptoms that arise from the neck, elbow or nerve compression elsewhere.
- Inability to follow splint and therapy instructions.
How to prepare
- Bring wrist X-rays, MRI or MR arthrogram, and notes of earlier treatment, including injections and splints.
- Ask your doctor about blood thinners and anti-inflammatories to review before surgery.
- Fasting is required for sedation or general anaesthesia; the hospital will give timings.
- Remove rings and jewellery from the hand beforehand.
- Arrange help at home, since you will have limited use of one hand for weeks.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- What do you expect to find, and what will you treat during the operation?
- Could the problem be managed without surgery?
- Is any repair planned that requires a longer period in a cast?
- What are the risks of nerve irritation or stiffness?
- When can I return to work, driving and sport?
- What hand therapy and follow-up can be arranged at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Surgery suggested without an examination, X-rays or MRI.
- Surgeon without hand or wrist arthroscopy experience.
- No plan for therapy or splinting afterwards.
- The team does not explain which procedures might be done under the same anaesthetic.
Questions about Wrist Arthroscopy abroad
Which country is cheapest for Wrist Arthroscopy?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($5,260), Thailand ($5,775), Turkey ($6,610), out of 9 countries we compare.
Is wrist arthroscopy diagnostic or treatment?
It can be both. The surgeon examines the joint and often treats the problem in the same operation, such as trimming or repairing a TFCC tear.
How long until I can use my hand?
Light use is possible within days after a simple procedure, but repairs need weeks of protection. Your surgeon will give specific limits.
Will it cure my wrist pain?
Many people improve if a clear problem is found, but not all pain has a visible cause. Results depend on what is treated.
Are there risks?
Risks include stiffness, nerve irritation, infection and persistent pain. These are uncommon with an experienced surgeon.
