What Revision Total Hip Replacement patients say

★★★★★ Hip replacement, back to surfing
Melbourne waiting list was 9 months. Flew to Bangkok, tier-1 DePuy Attune. Six-week physio included in the package. Surfing again at week 10. Total cost was half the out-of-pocket quote at home.
Samuel Lee, Australia · Bumrungrad International Verified
★★★★★ Hip replacement at Medanta — anterior approach, 5 days
Right hip osteoarthritis. Polish quote was reasonable but the surgeon did posterior approach. Medanta Gurgaon offered direct anterior approach (faster recovery). Surgery 90 minutes, walking same day, discharged day 5. Back to office work…

About Revision Total Hip Replacement

Revision is more complex than a first replacement. The surgeon removes the old components, assesses bone loss, and uses specialised cups, longer stems, metal augments or bone graft to rebuild a stable fit. If infection is the cause, the operation may be done in two stages with an antibiotic spacer between them. Operating time is longer and blood loss is greater.

Many patients regain pain relief and better walking, but results are less predictable than a first hip replacement. They depend on why the implant failed, the amount of bone remains, any infection, your general health and the surgeon's revision experience. Dislocation, infection and further loosening are more likely than after a primary operation.

Plan for about a week in hospital, followed by walking with aids and possibly hip precautions for several weeks. Stay near the hospital until your surgeon is happy with the wound, and discuss clot prevention before any flight. Bring your original operation record, implant sticker and all imaging, since the surgeon needs to identify the existing components.

Usually a good fit if

  • Painful loosening or wear of a hip implant seen on X-ray or CT.
  • Recurrent dislocation of the replaced hip.
  • Periprosthetic infection confirmed or suspected after investigation.
  • Fracture around the implant or serious bone loss around it.

May need to wait if

  • Pain with no clear implant cause, where the source may be the spine or soft tissue.
  • Active untreated infection elsewhere in the body.
  • Unstable heart or lung conditions that must be optimised first.
  • Unfit to withstand a longer operation, where a smaller procedure may be better.
How to prepare
  1. Bring operative notes and implant stickers from your first hip replacement; they help identify the implant.
  2. Expect blood tests, including infection markers, and X-rays or CT to plan bone reconstruction.
  3. Ask your doctor about blood thinners, diabetes and immunosuppressant medicines to review.
  4. Treat dental, urinary and skin infections before surgery.
  5. Arrange crutches or a walker and a plan for help at home, as recovery is slower than first replacement.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. What is the cause of my hip problem, and what tests have you done to exclude infection?
  2. Do you have the record of my first implant, and is a matching revision implant available?
  3. Will the surgery be one stage or two, and what degree of bone loss do you expect?
  4. How many revision hip replacements do you do each year?
  5. What is the risk of dislocation, infection and further revision?
  6. What follow-up and X-rays can be arranged back home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Surgery planned without checking for infection first.
  • The hospital does not stock revision implants or bone-graft options.
  • No blood bank or intensive care back-up for a more complex operation.
  • The surgeon cannot identify your original implant.

Questions about Revision Total Hip Replacement abroad

Which country is cheapest for Revision Total Hip Replacement?

The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($18,913), Thailand ($23,850), Turkey ($27,650), out of 9 countries we compare.

How long will I stay in hospital for Revision Total Hip Replacement?

Most patients spend about 6 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 120 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.

Is a revision harder than the first hip replacement?

Yes. Revision surgery is more complex, usually longer and with a slightly higher risk of complications and a slower recovery than a first replacement.

Will I need two operations for infection?

Sometimes. A two-stage approach removes the implant, treats the infection with antibiotics, and inserts a new implant later. Your surgeon decides after tests.

How long will the revised hip last?

This depends on bone quality, implant type and your activity. Many revised hips last for years, but durability can be shorter than for first replacements.

When can I travel home?

Flying is usually delayed until you can walk safely and clot risk is controlled, often a few weeks. Your surgeon will confirm.
