About ORIF Tibia / Fibula
A shaft fracture of the tibia is often fixed with a rod passed down the middle of the bone, while fractures near the knee or ankle usually need plates and screws. The fibula is fixed only if it is needed for stability. Swelling can delay surgery, and a temporary frame may be used first. Open fractures also need careful wound cleaning and antibiotics.
Healing commonly takes three to six months, and the shin is a site where slow healing is more likely, especially in smokers and when the skin was damaged. Results depend on the fracture pattern, soft-tissue injury, infection, and how early you move the joints and bear weight as advised. Ankle fractures can leave stiffness or later arthritis.
Expect a hospital stay of a few days, then a period of protected weight-bearing on crutches. Plan to stay in the destination for the wound check and the first follow-up, and ask about clot prevention before flying. Bring your scans, arrange physiotherapy and follow-up X-rays at home, and avoid driving until your surgeon agrees.
Usually a good fit if
- A displaced, rotated or unstable fracture of the shin bone or ankle.
- Open fractures or those with joint involvement requiring precise realignment.
- Failed casting with loss of position.
- Patients needing early mobilisation for safe recovery.
May need to wait if
- Active infection or poor skin over the planned incision.
- Severe swelling or blisters, where surgery is delayed until the skin is ready.
- Unstable heart, lung or other medical conditions needing optimisation.
- Very limited walking ability before injury, in which a cast may suit better.
How to prepare
- Bring X-rays, CT scans and any emergency or wound-care notes; swelling and skin condition affect timing.
- Ask your doctor about blood thinners and diabetes medicines to review.
- Tell the team if the fracture was open (through the skin), as antibiotics and extra washout may already have been given.
- Have blood tests and an anaesthetic review; stop smoking, which slows bone healing.
- Arrange crutches, help at home and a plan for flying with a leg in a splint or cast.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Will you use a nail or a plate, and why is it best for this fracture?
- Is there damage to nerves, blood supply or the compartment, and how is it monitored?
- How long until I can put weight on the leg?
- What are the risks of infection, delayed healing and the need for further surgery?
- Will the hardware need to be removed?
- What follow-up and physiotherapy can be arranged back home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No assessment of leg swelling and compartment pressure around the time of surgery.
- Surgery done without X-ray imaging in theatre to check alignment.
- An open fracture without a plan for antibiotics and washout.
- No guidance about weight bearing or clot prevention.
Questions about ORIF Tibia / Fibula abroad
Which country is cheapest for ORIF Tibia / Fibula?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($6,248), Thailand ($7,680), Turkey ($9,358), out of 9 countries we compare.
How long will I stay in hospital for ORIF Tibia / Fibula?
Most patients spend about 3 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 120 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
How long does a tibia fracture take to heal?
Many shin fractures heal in about three to six months, although some take longer, particularly open fractures or in smokers. X-rays guide when you can return to full activity.
Can I put weight on my leg after surgery?
It depends on the fracture and fixation. Some people can stand on the leg soon after a nail, whereas plated fractures near joints usually need weeks of limited weight bearing.
Will the metalwork need to come out?
Not always. If hardware is painful or prominent under the skin, it can be removed after the bone has healed. Your surgeon will discuss this.
What happens if the bone does not heal?
Non-union is uncommon but can occur. Further surgery, bone grafting or revision fixation may be needed. Not smoking and following weight-bearing advice lower this risk.
