About ORIF Wrist (Distal Radius)
Through a cut on the palm side of the wrist, the surgeon lifts the fragments back into position, checks the alignment with X-ray imaging and secures the bone with a low-profile plate and screws. Some fractures are held with wires or an external frame instead. The operation is often done under a nerve block with sedation, and the hand may be placed in a splint afterwards.
Most people regain good use of the hand, though grip strength and full movement can take months to return and some stiffness is common. Results depend on how badly the fracture is displaced, whether the joint surface is involved, bone quality and early finger movement. Nerve irritation, tendon problems and stiffness are the main complications to discuss.
You may go home the same day or the next. Plan to remain for a week or two for a wound check and splint change, and keep the hand raised and fingers moving. Bring your X-rays, ask about hand therapy at home, and expect to be unable to lift or drive for several weeks.
Usually a good fit if
- A displaced, comminuted or unstable distal radius fracture where a cast would not hold alignment.
- Fracture extending into the wrist joint surface.
- Active people wanting early wrist movement and reliable function.
- Failed closed reduction or a fracture that has slipped in a cast.
May need to wait if
- Severely contaminated open wounds, which first need washing out and infection control.
- Minimally displaced, stable fractures that heal well in a cast.
- Very frail patients with low demands in whom casting may be reasonable.
- Active skin infection over the planned incision.
How to prepare
- Bring X-rays or CT scans of your wrist and any emergency department notes.
- Ask your doctor about anticoagulants and other medicines to review, and tell the team about diabetes or osteoporosis.
- Fasting is required for general anaesthesia or sedation; the hospital will tell you the exact timing.
- Remove rings and jewellery from the injured hand, as swelling can make this difficult later.
- Arrange help at home, since you will have one hand out of action for weeks.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is surgery needed, or would a cast give the same result for my fracture?
- What type of plate and screws will you use, and will they need removing?
- Will you operate through the palm or the back of the wrist, and why?
- When can I start moving my fingers and wrist, and when can I drive or lift?
- What are the risks of stiffness, tendon irritation and nerve symptoms, such as carpal tunnel?
- Which hand therapy and X-ray follow-up can be arranged at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No X-rays or CT scans reviewed before recommending surgery.
- The team does not mention hand therapy or early finger movement afterwards.
- No discussion of whether the implant is titanium or stainless steel, or whether it will be left in.
- Surgery performed by a surgeon without hand or upper-limb experience.
Questions about ORIF Wrist (Distal Radius) abroad
Which country is cheapest for ORIF Wrist (Distal Radius)?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($4,778), Thailand ($6,170), Turkey ($7,215), out of 9 countries we compare.
How long will I stay in hospital for ORIF Wrist (Distal Radius)?
Most patients spend about 1 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 35 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
Will the plate need to come out?
Most plates are left in place for life. They are removed only if they irritate tendons or cause discomfort, which your surgeon will discuss if it arises.
When can I move my fingers?
Right away. Finger movement from day one is encouraged to prevent stiffness and swelling, while the wrist stays protected in a splint.
How long until I can drive?
Many people drive again around six to eight weeks, once the wrist is out of the splint and they can control the steering wheel safely. Your surgeon will confirm.
Will my wrist be completely normal?
Many people regain good function, though some stiffness or reduced grip can persist, especially after joint-involving fractures. Hand therapy helps.
