What Lumbar Microdiscectomy patients say

★★★★★ Lumbar microdiscectomy at Apollo — back to walking same day
L4-L5 disc herniation with severe leg pain. Local consultations recommended fusion (which seemed aggressive for my case). Apollo Delhi did simple microdiscectomy. 90-minute surgery, walking same day, discharged 36 hours. Pain immediate…

About Lumbar Microdiscectomy

Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon makes an incision of a few centimetres, moves aside a small amount of muscle and bone, and removes the herniated fragment while protecting the nerve under magnification. It usually takes under an hour. It is often considered after several weeks of non-surgical care, or sooner for severe weakness.

Leg pain usually improves within days to weeks, and most people recover well. Back pain may improve less predictably, and numbness can linger. Results depend on the match between symptoms and scan findings, and the disc can herniate again in a minority of people. Smoking and heavy lifting can raise that chance.

Most people go home the same or next day and start walking straight away. Plan a few days to a week near the surgeon for a wound check, then avoid long sitting, lifting and flying until advised. Bring your MRI, and arrange a graded physiotherapy plan at home.

Usually a good fit if

  • Leg pain (sciatica) from a herniated disc matching MRI, not improving after about six weeks of non-surgical treatment.
  • Progressive leg weakness or foot drop from nerve compression.
  • Severe leg pain limiting daily life.
  • Cauda equina syndrome (loss of bladder control, saddle numbness) needing urgent surgery.

May need to wait if

  • Back pain alone without leg symptoms or nerve compression.
  • MRI that does not match your symptoms.
  • Pain improving with non-surgical care.
  • Spinal instability or deformity needing fusion.
How to prepare
  1. Have a recent MRI that matches your leg symptoms and confirms the herniated level.
  2. Tell your surgeon about leg weakness, bladder or bowel changes, previous spine surgery and smoking.
  3. Review blood thinners and anti-inflammatory medicines with your doctor; do not change them yourself.
  4. Keep walking as much as pain allows, and avoid prolonged bed rest.
  5. Arrange help with lifting at home, and check fitness to fly.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Does my MRI match my leg symptoms and the level to be operated on?
  2. How many microdiscectomies do you do each year?
  3. What are the risks of re-herniation, nerve injury and dural tear?
  4. Is endoscopic surgery an option for me?
  5. When can I return to work and lifting?
  6. What rehabilitation can I do at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Recommending surgery for back pain without leg symptoms.
  • No MRI matching your symptoms.
  • Promising permanent cure with no mention of recurrence.
  • No rehabilitation or follow-up plan.
