About Linx Reflux Management

Linx is done under general anaesthesia, usually by keyhole surgery through a few small cuts, and takes about thirty to sixty minutes. The surgeon measures the lower oesophagus with a sizing tool, then wraps the device, a bracelet of magnetic beads linked by wires, around it. The magnets keep the valve closed against reflux, but swallowing pushes them apart. No part of the stomach is cut or wrapped.

Many people have less heartburn and regurgitation and can reduce acid medicines, with a lower chance of bloating and trouble belching than after fundoplication. Results depend on careful selection with endoscopy and tests, and on hiatus hernia repair when needed. Difficulty swallowing is common at first, and a few people need the device removed.

You usually stay one night, and swallowing is eased with a soft diet in the first days. Plan to stay nearby for about a week. Tell all doctors you have a magnetic device, because MRI scans above 1.5 tesla are not allowed in some cases. Bring endoscopy and pH study results, and keep the implant card.

Usually a good fit if

  • Proven GERD with symptoms despite acid-suppressing medicines.
  • Normal oesophageal motility.
  • Small or no hiatus hernia, or one repaired at surgery.
  • Patients who want to keep the ability to belch and vomit.

May need to wait if

  • Large hiatus hernia or severe oesophagitis not suitable for the device.
  • Poor oesophageal motility.
  • Allergy to titanium, stainless steel or nickel.
  • Likely need for repeated MRI scans beyond device limits.
How to prepare
  1. Upper endoscopy, pH testing and manometry confirm reflux and exclude motility disorders.
  2. Barium swallow may be done to assess hiatus hernia.
  3. Review reflux medicines with your doctor; do not stop them yourself.
  4. Check that MRI scans are not needed in future, as device limits apply; discuss with your doctor.
  5. Fast as instructed and bring the device card after surgery.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Am I suitable for Linx compared with a fundoplication?
  2. What is your experience with this device?
  3. What are the chances of swallowing difficulty or the need for dilatation?
  4. Under what conditions could the device need to be removed?
  5. What are the limits on MRI scans?
  6. What follow-up is needed at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Offered without pH testing or manometry.
  • Surgeon who has placed few devices.
  • No device card or MRI information.
  • No discussion of fundoplication as an alternative.
  • Promises of no reflux at all.
