About Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair

The operation is done under general anaesthesia and takes forty-five to ninety minutes. The surgeon makes three small cuts, one at the navel for the camera. In the TEP approach the working space is made outside the peritoneum, while in TAPP the peritoneum is opened. The hernia is pulled back, and a mesh is placed over the weak area and fixed or left in place.

Compared with open repair, keyhole repair often means less pain and an earlier return to work, with low recurrence in experienced hands, and it can fix both sides in one operation. Outcomes depend on the size of the hernia, the mesh technique and the surgeon's skill. Rare problems include long-term groin pain, bladder or bowel injury and seroma.

Most people go home the same day or the next, walk straight away and fly after about one week. Avoid heavy lifting for about two to four weeks. Bring any previous hernia surgery records. Ask for the mesh type to be recorded, and see your doctor at home if swelling, fever or worsening pain develops.

Usually a good fit if

  • Bilateral inguinal hernias.
  • Recurrent hernias after open repair.
  • Active adults wanting a quick recovery.
  • Women with groin hernias where femoral hernia must be excluded.

May need to wait if

  • Severe heart or lung disease unfit for general anaesthesia.
  • Previous major pelvic or prostate surgery that makes the laparoscopic approach difficult.
  • Large scrotal hernias that may need open repair.
  • Active infection.
How to prepare
  1. Clinical examination, with ultrasound if the diagnosis is unclear.
  2. Review blood thinners and other medicines with your doctor; change nothing yourself.
  3. Stop smoking and treat chronic cough or constipation before surgery if possible.
  4. Fast as instructed and arrange transport home.
  5. Bring prior scan reports.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Is a laparoscopic or open repair best for my hernia?
  2. Which technique, TEP or TAPP, do you use?
  3. What mesh and fixation do you use?
  4. What is the risk of chronic groin pain and recurrence?
  5. How many operations of this type do you perform?
  6. What activity limits apply after surgery?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Mesh avoided with no explanation.
  • Surgeon with little laparoscopic hernia experience.
  • No explanation of chronic pain risks.
  • No advice on lifting limits.
  • Repair without examining both sides.
