About Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia and takes about one to two hours. The surgeon makes a few small cuts in the abdomen, fills it with carbon dioxide and inserts a camera and instruments. The duct and artery supplying the gallbladder are identified, clipped and divided, and the gallbladder is placed in a bag and removed. In an inflamed gallbladder the operation may be harder.
Pain from gallstones usually stops after surgery, and most people return to a normal diet. Outcomes depend on whether the gallbladder is acutely inflamed, scarred or has stones in the bile duct, and on the surgeon's experience. A small number of operations are converted to open surgery for safety, and complications such as bile leakage are uncommon.
Plan to stay nearby for about a week, with a hospital stay of one to two nights. You can walk the same or next day, and avoid heavy lifting for around two weeks. Bring ultrasound reports and blood tests, and tell the team about any blood thinners. Get in touch with your home doctor if fever, yellowing or severe pain develops.
Usually a good fit if
- Gallstones with repeated pain attacks.
- Inflamed gallbladder (cholecystitis).
- Gallstone pancreatitis after recovery.
- Gallbladder polyps or stones with complications.
May need to wait if
- Severe heart or lung disease unfit for anaesthesia until optimised.
- Acute severe infection needing stabilisation first.
- Uncontrolled bleeding disorders.
- Stones without symptoms, where surgery is often unnecessary.
How to prepare
- Ultrasound, blood tests and liver function tests confirm the diagnosis.
- Further imaging such as MRCP may be done if the bile duct is involved.
- Review blood thinners, diabetes medicines and other tablets with your doctor; change nothing yourself.
- Fast from midnight or as instructed.
- Bring previous scans and discharge summaries.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is surgery needed for my symptoms?
- What are the chances of conversion to open surgery?
- How do you prevent bile duct injury?
- Will you check the bile duct for stones?
- What is the usual stay and diet afterwards?
- Who should I contact at home if problems arise?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Advice for surgery without an ultrasound.
- Surgeon offers only open surgery without explanation.
- No talk of risks or alternatives.
- No plan for complications.
- No after-care instructions.
