Coût de ESWL / RIRS (calculs rénaux) à l'étranger (2026)
ESWL and RIRS are the two main ways of clearing kidney stones without cutting the skin. ESWL breaks stones with shock waves, while RIRS reaches them with a flexible scope and laser through the urethra.

À propos de ESWL / RIRS (calculs rénaux)
With ESWL, shock waves aimed through the skin crack the stone into fragments that you pass in the urine, usually under sedation. With RIRS, a thin flexible telescope goes up the urethra and bladder into the kidney, and a laser breaks the stone, which is often extracted in a basket. RIRS needs a general anaesthetic, and a temporary stent is common after it.
Which one is better depends on stone size, position, hardness, your kidney anatomy and body size. ESWL suits smaller, softer stones; RIRS is more likely to clear the stone in a single session, including hard stones and those in awkward positions. Stones may recur, so a metabolic check and drinking plenty of water matter afterwards.
Both are day case or one-night procedures, and you can usually fly within a few days, though ESWL fragments may cause colic while they pass. If a stent is placed, ask when and where it will be removed, since that may need a second visit. Bring your CT scan and urine tests, and arrange follow-up imaging at home.
Généralement adapté si
- Kidney stones of small to moderate size that cause pain, blockage, infection or are growing.
- A patient who wants to avoid a puncture through the back and accepts the chance of more than one session.
- Stones suited to ESWL, or those in the kidney better treated by flexible scope (RIRS).
- Normal clotting and no active infection.
Il peut falloir attendre si
- Active urinary infection must be treated before either procedure.
- Pregnancy rules out ESWL and needs specialist advice for any stone treatment.
- Uncorrected bleeding disorders or blood thinners need a plan from your doctor.
- Very large or complex stones may need percutaneous surgery (PCNL) instead.
Comment se préparer
- Bring your CT scan, ultrasound and any previous stone analysis so the surgeon can choose between ESWL and RIRS.
- Have a urine culture and treat any infection before the procedure.
- Tell your doctor about blood thinners and other medicines; changes only on the doctor's instruction.
- Follow fasting instructions for sedation or general anaesthesia and arrange transport home.
- If a stent is planned, ask about its removal date before you arrange travel.
Questions à poser à votre chirurgien
- Is ESWL or RIRS better for my stone, and why?
- How many sessions might I need, and what is the chance of leftover fragments?
- Will a stent be used, how long will it stay, and how is it removed?
- What are the risks, such as infection, bleeding or a blocked ureter?
- How will you test the stone type, and what can I do to stop new stones?
- Who can arrange a follow-up scan and stent removal at home?
Signaux d'alerte à surveiller en comparant les hôpitaux
- A treatment is promised as always one session regardless of stone size and type.
- No imaging or urine test before treatment.
- No explanation about stents, their discomfort or timing of removal.
- No stone analysis or prevention plan.
