Ce que disent les patients ayant fait Radiochirurgie CyberKnife
Single small brain metastasis from a previously-treated lung cancer. Local oncologist wanted whole-brain radiation. I asked about stereotactic options and Apollo Delhi has CyberKnife. Single 90-minute session, outpatient. Imaging at 3…
À propos de Radiochirurgie CyberKnife
A linear accelerator is mounted on a robotic arm that moves around you and adjusts the beam as you breathe or shift slightly, tracking the tumour. Planning uses CT and often MRI to outline the target and nearby organs at risk. Treatment is given as an outpatient, each session lasting about 30 to 90 minutes, and sometimes tiny gold markers are inserted near the tumour to aid tracking.
Results depend on the tumour type, size and location, how close it lies to sensitive structures, and the radiation dose possible. For small, well-defined tumours, control rates can be high, but it is not suitable for every cancer. Side effects depend on the site and may include fatigue or local inflammation, which usually settle, and follow-up scans over months show how the tumour responds.
Treatment is brief, but planning scans and a mask or cushion fitting usually come first, so allow about a week in total. You can usually travel between sessions. Bring all imaging as discs and reports. Arrange follow-up MRI or CT with your home team, who will need the treatment plan and dose details.
Généralement adapté si
- A small or well-defined tumour in brain, spine, lung, liver, prostate or similar site suitable for stereotactic treatment.
- Patients who cannot have surgery, or choose a non-invasive option, with oncologist agreement.
- Able to lie still for the session, or hold breathing instructions where needed.
Il peut falloir attendre si
- Large or widely spread tumours may not be suitable for stereotactic doses.
- Previous radiation to the same area can limit what further dose can be given safely.
- Inability to lie still, or tumours too close to critical organs, need specialist review.
Comment se préparer
- Bring all scans, biopsy reports and radiation history so planning can account for earlier treatment.
- If gold markers are needed, ask your doctor about adjusting blood thinners before the small procedure.
- Plan a planning CT and MRI visit a few days to two weeks before the first treatment.
- Wear comfortable clothing without metal, and tell staff about pacemakers or implants.
- Arrange to stay nearby for the full course, since the sessions occur on consecutive or alternate days.
Questions à poser à votre chirurgien
- Is my tumour suited to CyberKnife, and what alternatives such as surgery or standard radiation exist?
- How many sessions are planned and what dose per session?
- How will tumour movement from breathing be tracked?
- Which side effects can occur in my treated area, and when do they appear?
- How and when will response be measured on scans?
- Who is the radiation oncologist and physicist responsible for my plan?
Signaux d'alerte à surveiller en comparant les hôpitaux
- Treatment is started without planning scans reviewed by a radiation oncologist.
- No named physicist or quality-check procedure for the plan.
- Claims that the machine suits every tumour regardless of size and site.
- No clear follow-up scans or plan for reviewing response.
