À propos de Colectomy (Colon Resection)
Surgeons can remove the right, transverse, left or sigmoid colon, or all of it, depending on where the disease sits. It can be performed through an open incision, laparoscopically or robotically, and the surrounding lymph nodes are removed when the reason is cancer. The ends are usually rejoined with stitches or staples, and occasionally a temporary stoma is made to protect the join.
For colon cancer, outcomes depend mainly on stage, the number of lymph nodes examined, and whether further chemotherapy is needed. Keyhole surgery usually means less pain and quicker recovery than open surgery when it is suitable. Possible complications include wound infection, a leak at the join and slow return of bowel function. Your fitness and surgical experience influence these risks.
Expect a hospital stay of around a week, with eating restarted gradually. Plan to stay nearby for a short time afterwards before flying, and avoid heavy lifting for about six weeks. Bring your colonoscopy and CT reports, and agree who will review the pathology result and arrange any chemotherapy and surveillance colonoscopy at home.
Généralement adapté si
- Colon cancer or a large polyp that cannot be removed at colonoscopy.
- Recurrent complicated diverticulitis, or severe colitis not controlled by medicines.
- Fit enough for general anaesthesia and able to follow diet and wound-care instructions afterwards.
Il peut falloir attendre si
- Widespread cancer spread may mean surgery is not the first step, so staging and team discussion matter.
- Severe heart or lung disease may need optimisation before a major abdominal operation.
- Uncorrected severe anaemia, malnutrition or active infection should be treated first.
Comment se préparer
- Bring colonoscopy, biopsy and CT or MRI reports so the surgeon can confirm the segment to remove.
- Follow bowel-preparation and antibiotic instructions exactly if your surgeon prescribes them.
- Ask your doctor about adjusting blood thinners, diabetes medicines and iron or anaemia treatment beforehand.
- Tell the team about earlier abdominal operations, which affect the surgical approach.
- Plan walking and breathing exercises, and arrange help at home for the first weeks.
Questions à poser à votre chirurgien
- Which part of the colon will be removed and how many lymph nodes will be examined?
- Is laparoscopic or robotic surgery suitable for me, and what is your conversion rate to open?
- How likely is a temporary stoma, and how would it be reversed?
- How is the bowel join checked, and what happens if it leaks?
- What diet and activity limits apply in the first weeks?
- Will I need chemotherapy, and who arranges it at home?
Signaux d'alerte à surveiller en comparant les hôpitaux
- No staging scans or colonoscopy findings are reviewed before recommending surgery.
- The surgeon cannot say how many colon resections they do each year.
- No plan for managing a bowel leak or return to theatre if needed.
- You are not told that pathology decides on further treatment.
