À propos de Adjuvant Chemotherapy (per cycle)
A cycle is a set of days of treatment followed by a rest period to let the body recover, commonly two to four weeks in total. Drugs are given as an infusion into a vein or as tablets, in a day unit. The regimen, the number of cycles and the timing, usually starting some weeks after surgery, depend on the cancer's type and stage.
The aim is to destroy any remaining cancer cells that scans cannot see, improving the chance of long-term control. The benefit chemotherapy gives depends on the cancer type, its stage and how well you tolerate the planned schedule. Side effects such as tiredness, nausea, low blood counts and hair loss are expected and are managed with supportive medicines.
Chemotherapy is given in repeated cycles, so one cycle abroad is rarely the whole plan. Agree the full regimen with your oncologist, bring your pathology and surgery reports, and make sure blood tests and side-effect care are available at home between cycles. Continuity of drugs and doses matters more than where one cycle is given.
Généralement adapté si
- Cancer removed by surgery but with a risk of returning, such as colon, breast, stomach or lung cancer at certain stages.
- Pathology showing lymph node involvement or high-risk features.
- Patients who have recovered from surgery, usually within about six to eight weeks.
- Good enough fitness and blood counts to tolerate treatment.
Il peut falloir attendre si
- Poor blood counts or serious kidney, liver or heart problems needing correction.
- Active infection.
- Pregnancy, which needs specialist advice.
- Cancers where adjuvant chemotherapy gives no proven benefit.
Comment se préparer
- Bring the pathology report, scan reports and operation summary from your cancer surgery.
- Tell the team about all medicines and supplements, as some interact with chemotherapy. Do not stop any unless your doctor instructs you.
- Expect blood counts, kidney and liver tests, and sometimes heart tests before each cycle.
- Have dental problems treated before starting if possible.
