About Targeted Therapy (Trastuzumab / Imatinib course)
This is a course of medicine rather than an operation. Trastuzumab is given as an infusion or injection at a day-care unit, usually every three weeks, while imatinib is a tablet taken daily at home. Treatment may run for months or years, sometimes alongside chemotherapy, and the drug and schedule are chosen to match your tumour's test results.
Response depends on whether the target is truly present, the stage of disease, and how well you tolerate the drug. Some people have a lasting response, others develop resistance over time. Side effects differ by drug and can include heart changes with trastuzumab or fluid retention and tiredness with imatinib, so regular monitoring is part of treatment.
Bring full pathology and biomarker reports, such as HER2 or BCR-ABL results, plus your current medicine list. Because treatment continues for a long time, work out in advance who will give each cycle, who will monitor your heart or blood counts, and how you will obtain a reliable supply of the drug at home.
Usually a good fit if
- Tumour or blood test confirming the specific target, such as HER2-positive disease or BCR-ABL-positive leukaemia.
- Adequate heart function for trastuzumab, and acceptable liver and kidney function.
- Willingness to keep regular blood tests, scans and heart checks for the duration.
- A cancer type for which the drug has an established role.
May need to wait if
- Target not confirmed by a reliable laboratory test.
- Significantly reduced heart pumping function, which may need cardiology review before trastuzumab.
- Pregnancy or plans to conceive, because these drugs can harm an unborn baby.
- Inability to take the drug consistently or to attend monitoring.
How to prepare
- Bring pathology and molecular reports (HER2, BCR-ABL, KIT or similar); the drug is only appropriate if the target is confirmed.
- Have a baseline heart assessment such as an echocardiogram if trastuzumab is planned, plus blood counts, liver and kidney tests.
- Give your doctor a full list of medicines and supplements, as imatinib interacts with several common drugs; change nothing without instruction.
- Agree a plan for how long you will stay abroad and how treatment will continue safely at home.
- Ask about a reliable supply of the same brand or biosimilar for the whole course.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Which test confirmed my target, and was it done in an accredited laboratory?
- Is this the original drug or a biosimilar, and is the course length the same as in international guidelines?
- How will my heart, liver and blood counts be monitored, and how often?
- What side effects should prompt me to call urgently, and who answers from abroad?
- What happens if I miss doses or cannot get the drug at home?
- Should this be combined with chemotherapy, surgery or hormone therapy?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Prescribing a targeted drug without seeing target-test results.
- Selling a short 'course' as a complete treatment for a cancer that normally needs long-term or combined therapy.
- No heart monitoring plan when trastuzumab is used.
- Unclear drug origin, batch or storage, or refusal to name the brand.
Questions about Targeted Therapy (Trastuzumab / Imatinib course) abroad
Which country is cheapest for Targeted Therapy (Trastuzumab / Imatinib course)?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($8,213), Thailand ($10,245), Turkey ($12,290), out of 9 countries we compare.
Is targeted therapy the same as chemotherapy?
No. It blocks a specific abnormality in cancer cells, so side effects differ, but it can still cause tiredness, heart effects or liver changes. Sometimes it is combined with chemotherapy.
How long will I need to take it?
It depends on the cancer: trastuzumab is often given for about a year in early breast cancer, whereas imatinib may be continued for years. Your oncologist sets the duration.
Can I continue it after returning home?
Often yes, if the drug is available and a local oncologist agrees to supervise. Arrange this before you travel.
Do I need a heart check?
For trastuzumab, yes, before and during treatment. Imatinib needs mainly blood and liver monitoring.
