About Cancer Surgery
Surgery may be open, laparoscopic or robotic, and it may remove the whole organ or only part of it. The surgeon may also take lymph nodes to check for spread and may use frozen-section analysis during the operation to confirm clear margins. For many cancers, surgery is combined with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or targeted drugs before or after the operation, so the plan is usually agreed by a multidisciplinary team.
Outcomes depend on the cancer type and stage, whether the tumour can be removed completely, the final pathology and your general fitness. Surgeon and hospital experience matter, particularly for complex operations. Recovery varies from a few weeks to a few months, and some operations change how you eat, pass urine or use the affected body part. Your team will explain likely functional effects.
Plan for a hospital stay of days to over a week depending on the operation, plus time to recover nearby before travelling home. Bring staging scans, biopsy slides and reports, and a list of medicines. Check that your home oncologist will take over for adjuvant treatment and surveillance, and that pathology results will be shared with them.
Usually a good fit if
- A tumour that appears removable on scans, without spread that makes surgery pointless.
- Fit enough for the anaesthesia and recovery after a major operation.
- A multidisciplinary team has agreed that surgery, alone or with other treatment, is the right step.
May need to wait if
- Widespread spread that surgery cannot clear usually calls for drug treatment or radiation instead.
- Severe heart, lung or kidney disease may need optimisation or a less extensive operation.
- Poor nutrition or active infection should be treated first.
How to prepare
- Bring every scan, biopsy slide or block, and pathology report, as hospitals often request a second pathology review.
- Ask your doctor which blood thinners, diabetes or heart medicines to adjust before the operation.
- Expect blood tests, heart and lung checks, and sometimes nutrition assessment before surgery.
- Stop smoking and limit alcohol well before surgery, as both slow healing.
- Check with your surgeon when you may fly home and arrange help for the first weeks.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- What type of cancer and stage do you believe I have, and what is the goal of surgery?
- Which approach, open or minimally invasive, do you recommend and why?
- How many operations like mine do you do each year?
- Will I need chemotherapy, radiation or other treatment before or after surgery?
- When will pathology results be available and who will explain them to me?
- Who coordinates my oncology care when I return home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Surgery is recommended without staging scans or a tumour board discussion.
- You cannot speak to the operating surgeon before travelling.
- There is no plan for pathology review and further treatment afterwards.
- The surgeon cannot say how many similar operations they perform.
Questions about Cancer Surgery abroad
Which country is cheapest for Cancer Surgery?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($8,259), Malaysia ($10,337), Thailand ($10,731), out of 9 countries we compare.
How long will I stay in hospital for Cancer Surgery?
Most patients spend about 7 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 30 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
How long is the hospital stay?
It depends on the organ and approach, from one or two days for minor operations to over a week for major abdominal or chest surgery. Your surgeon will give a realistic estimate.
Will I need more treatment after surgery?
Often yes. Pathology on the removed tissue shows the stage and margins, and chemotherapy, radiation or targeted drugs may follow.
Can I travel for surgery before starting other treatment?
Sometimes, but treatment sequence matters. Ask your oncologist at home to coordinate with the surgical team so delays are avoided.
What is the risk of the cancer returning?
This depends on cancer type, stage and margins. Your surgeon and oncologist can explain your individual risk and the follow-up needed.
