About Syringomyelia Surgery
The approach depends on the cause. When the syrinx comes from a Chiari malformation, decompression at the skull base restores spinal fluid flow, and the syrinx often shrinks. In other cases the surgeon frees scar tissue or places a shunt to drain the cyst. Treating the cause is generally preferred over draining the cyst alone.
Surgery is usually aimed at halting progression rather than reversing damage. Pain and headaches may ease, while numbness and weakness improve less reliably. The result depends on the cause, how long the syrinx has been present and the extent of cord damage. Syrinxes can recur, so follow-up scanning is needed.
Plan for about five days in hospital and several weeks of recovery before travelling far. Bring recent MRI scans of the brain and spine and your neurological notes. Arrange repeat MRI and neurosurgical review at home, and report new weakness, numbness, pain or bladder changes promptly.
Usually a good fit if
- Syrinx with progressive weakness, numbness, pain or scoliosis.
- Syrinx associated with Chiari malformation or tethered cord.
- Enlarging syrinx on MRI.
- Patients fit for general anaesthesia.
May need to wait if
- Small, stable syrinx without symptoms, which is usually observed.
- Severe medical illness making surgery unsafe.
- Active infection or bleeding disorder.
- Long-standing severe neurological loss, where recovery is unlikely.
How to prepare
- Bring MRI of the brain and whole spine on disc, and notes about numbness, weakness and scoliosis.
- Review blood thinners and nerve-pain medicines with your doctor, who will instruct changes.
- Expect blood tests, and sometimes MRI flow studies and a spinal deformity check.
- Record your current strength and sensation so changes can be compared.
- Discuss pain management and plan for physiotherapy.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- What caused my syrinx, and what will you treat?
- Which operation do you recommend: decompression, untethering or shunt?
- How likely is the syrinx to shrink, and how will we know?
- What are the risks to strength and sensation?
- How many syrinx operations do you perform each year?
- What follow-up MRI schedule do I need?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Surgery without identifying the cause of the syrinx.
- No neuromonitoring or spine MRI before operating.
- Promise that symptoms will fully reverse.
- No plan for long-term follow-up.
Questions about Syringomyelia Surgery abroad
Which country is cheapest for Syringomyelia Surgery?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($15,383), Thailand ($17,145), Turkey ($21,000), out of 9 countries we compare.
How long will I stay in hospital for Syringomyelia Surgery?
Most patients spend about 5 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 42 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
Will the syrinx disappear?
It often shrinks or stabilises after the cause is treated, but this takes months and not every syrinx shrinks.
Will my symptoms recover?
Progression usually stops or slows. Existing numbness and weakness may only partly recover.
Is a shunt always needed?
No. Many syrinxes settle after the underlying cause is treated, with a shunt kept for those that persist.
Can it come back?
Yes, so follow-up MRI and review of new symptoms are important.
