About Surrogacy Coordination + IVF Cycle
The IVF part begins with stimulation injections for the intended mother or an egg donor for about ten days, with scans to track growth. Eggs are collected through the vagina under light sedation, taking about twenty minutes, fertilised in the laboratory and cultured to the blastocyst stage. Embryos are frozen, and one is later transferred to the surrogate after her womb lining has been prepared.
Embryo quality depends mainly on the age of the egg provider and the sperm quality, and the chance of pregnancy per transfer also depends on the surrogate's health and womb lining. More than one transfer is sometimes needed. Surrogacy is regulated differently in each country, so the legal side matters as much as the medical.
Confirm the law and what rights you will have over the child before you start, and get independent legal advice. Expect an initial trip of about two weeks for egg collection, with frozen embryos then kept for transfer. Plan further stays for the transfer and birth, and keep copies of all consents and contracts.
Usually a good fit if
- Women without a uterus or with a medical reason not to carry pregnancy.
- Same-sex male couples or single men, where the law allows surrogacy.
- Repeated implantation failure suspected to be uterine.
- Intended parents who have a legal route to parentage.
May need to wait if
- Surrogacy being unlawful or unrecognised for your nationality.
- Poor ovarian reserve in the intended mother, where donor eggs may be needed.
- Medical conditions that make egg collection or sedation unsafe until optimised.
- Lack of written agreements and informed consent from all parties.
How to prepare
- Take legal advice on surrogacy in the treatment country and your home country before starting.
- Intended mother or donor: hormone tests, pelvic scan and infection screening; intended father: semen analysis.
- Review medicines with your doctor and change nothing yourself.
- Plan the timeline and possible second trip for embryo transfer or the birth.
- Bring identity papers, marriage or relationship documents and medical records.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is this arrangement lawful for me and how is parentage established?
- How is the surrogate screened and who supervises her care?
- How many embryos will be transferred and how are extra embryos handled?
- Will embryos be tested before transfer?
- What happens if the first transfer does not result in pregnancy?
- How will we get the baby's passport and travel home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No clear legal contracts.
- Providers who cannot explain the screening of surrogates.
- Guarantee of a baby or time frame.
- Unclear policy on multiple embryo transfer.
- Lack of independent legal advice.
