About Donor Egg IVF
The donor takes hormone injections to stimulate her ovaries and has her eggs collected under sedation. They are fertilised with sperm from the recipient's husband or a donor, and embryos are grown for several days. Meanwhile the recipient takes oestrogen and progesterone to prepare the womb lining. One or more embryos are transferred, and any spare ones can be frozen. Fresh and frozen donor cycles are both used.
Because egg quality is linked to the donor's age, success rates are usually higher than with the recipient's own eggs at an older age. Results depend on the donor's age and health, embryo quality, the womb lining and the recipient's health, and on laboratory standards. Multiple pregnancy risk is reduced by transferring one embryo. Legal and ethical rules on donation differ widely between countries.
Plan for about two to three weeks abroad if the donor and recipient cycles are synchronised, or a shorter stay if frozen eggs or embryos are used. A pregnancy test follows about two weeks after transfer. Check donor anonymity, consent and legal parentage rules in your home country, and have medical records and screening results ready.
Usually a good fit if
- Premature ovarian insufficiency or early menopause.
- Poor egg quality or repeated IVF failure with own eggs.
- Genetic conditions that could be passed on.
- A healthy womb able to carry a pregnancy.
May need to wait if
- Uterine problems that prevent implantation unless treated.
- Conditions that make pregnancy unsafe, such as severe heart disease.
- Unresolved legal or ethical concerns about donor gametes.
- Active pelvic infection or uncontrolled medical conditions.
How to prepare
- Have a womb assessment, ultrasound, infection screening and a fitness check for pregnancy, plus counselling.
- Tell the team about all medicines and medical conditions; any change is on your doctor's instruction.
- Clarify the legal rules for donor gametes in your destination and your home country before travelling.
- Plan the timing for womb preparation, embryo transfer and a pregnancy test.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- How are donors screened, and what information can I receive?
- Will fresh or frozen donor eggs be used?
- How many embryos will be transferred, and what are the twin risks?
- What medicines will I take and how will the lining be monitored?
- What is the legal status of the child and records in my country?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Donors are not medically or genetically screened.
- The clinic cannot explain the legal and consent arrangements.
- Several embryos are routinely transferred.
- No counselling is offered.
