About Snap-on Smile
The dentist takes impressions or digital scans of your teeth and a laboratory makes a custom shell, usually in a few weeks. No anaesthetic or tooth reduction is normally needed. You try the shell for fit, comfort and appearance, and adjustments are made. It clips over the upper teeth, the lower teeth or both, and you remove it for eating, cleaning and sleeping, depending on the design.
The shell improves how teeth look straight away, but it does not treat decay, gum disease or crooked bite, and your natural teeth stay as they are underneath. It can feel bulky at first and may affect speech briefly. Durability depends on the material, how carefully you handle it and whether you grind your teeth. Stains and cracks can develop, and replacement is usually needed after some years.
Because there is no surgery, you can often manage with a short stay, but allow time for the impression visit and the fitting. Have any decay or gum problems treated first, since a shell can trap plaque against them. Take care of it by cleaning both the shell and your teeth after meals, and ask for the dental records so a local dentist can adjust or remake it.
Usually a good fit if
- Stained, small, gapped or slightly uneven teeth where you want a reversible change.
- Healthy teeth and gums with no active decay.
- People who want a temporary or event-based cosmetic option rather than permanent veneers.
- Adults who can commit to removing and cleaning the appliance daily.
May need to wait if
- Active gum disease, loose teeth or untreated cavities.
- Severe crowding or a bite problem that would make the overlay bulky or unstable.
- Heavy teeth grinding that could crack or wear through the thin resin.
- Expecting it to straighten teeth or replace missing ones.
How to prepare
- Have a dental check, X-rays and cleaning first, and treat any decay or gum disease, because the overlay covers your teeth.
- Tell the dentist what you want to change, and bring photos of the shade and shape you prefer.
- Mention any gag reflex, teeth grinding or mouth breathing, which affect comfort and fit.
- Allow time for two visits, and ask whether a temporary or trial version is provided while you wait.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is this a removable overlay or a bonded restoration, and which material is used?
- Will the overlay make my teeth look thicker, and can I see a trial first?
- How should I eat, drink and clean with it, and what must I avoid?
- How long does it usually last and what happens if it cracks or stains?
- Would veneers or whitening suit me better, and can my home dentist adjust it?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- The clinic describes it as permanent or as straightening teeth.
- Teeth are drilled or reshaped without a clear explanation.
- No impressions or scans are taken and a generic size is offered.
- No advice is given on cleaning or on checking gum health.
Questions about Snap-on Smile abroad
Which country is cheapest for Snap-on Smile?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($1,163), Thailand ($1,440), Turkey ($1,640), out of 9 countries we compare.
Does it damage my teeth?
It is designed not to require drilling, so the teeth underneath are not cut. Poor hygiene under it can still cause decay or gum irritation, so clean both the teeth and the overlay daily.
Can I eat with it?
Many people take it out for meals, and hot or hard foods can damage it. Follow your dentist's instructions on what is safe.
How is it different from veneers?
Veneers are bonded permanently after enamel is reshaped. A snap-on overlay is removable, reversible and thinner, but less durable and less natural-looking up close.
