About Zygomatic Implants

Two or more long implants are placed on each side, passing through the gum and upper jaw into the zygomatic bone, usually under general anaesthesia or deep sedation. Surgeons often combine them with standard implants at the front and a fixed bridge. The bridge may be fitted within a day or so, or after healing. A CT scan is used to plan the exact angle of each implant.

Many people gain a fixed set of teeth without bone grafting, and the approach can shorten treatment compared with grafting. Results depend on the quality of cheekbone, planning, the surgeon's training, which is specialised, and your oral hygiene. Possible complications include sinus problems, swelling and infection around the implants, and the prosthesis needs regular maintenance and check-ups.

Plan to stay for several days to a couple of weeks for surgery and the first fitting, and expect swelling and a soft diet for a while. Full recovery and bone integration take around three months. Bring your scans and medical history, and arrange regular dental follow-up at home, since cleaning and monitoring of the implants matter over the years.

Usually a good fit if

  • Severe bone loss in the upper jaw that makes standard implants unsuitable.
  • Failed or declined bone grafting, or wanting to avoid grafting.
  • Long-standing denture problems with poor stability.
  • General health stable enough for surgery and anaesthesia.

May need to wait if

  • Active sinus infection or uncontrolled sinus disease.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking or conditions that impair bone healing.
  • Previous head and neck radiotherapy needing specialist assessment.
  • Bisphosphonate or other bone-active drugs that your doctor has not reviewed.
How to prepare
  1. Have a CT scan so the surgeon can plan implant angles through the sinus and cheekbone.
  2. Review medicines, smoking, diabetes and heart conditions with your doctor; any change is on your doctor's instruction.
  3. Fast as instructed for sedation or general anaesthesia and stock soft food.
  4. Plan time for fitting a temporary bridge, and ask how follow-up will work once you fly home.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Is a zygomatic implant needed, or would grafting or standard implants work?
  2. How many zygomatic and standard implants are planned, and where?
  3. Will a temporary fixed bridge be fitted straight away?
  4. What are the risks for sinus problems and how are they managed?
  5. What follow-up and maintenance can my home dentist provide, and who is responsible for complications?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Surgery is planned without a CT scan.
  • The surgeon has little experience with zygomatic implants.
  • Implant brand and components are not documented.
  • No plan exists for sinus issues or long-term maintenance.
