About Sacrocolpopexy (Robotic / Laparoscopic)
Done by robotic or standard keyhole surgery, the surgeon attaches a strip of synthetic mesh to the top of the vagina and fixes the other end to a ligament in front of the sacrum, restoring the natural angle and support. Hysterectomy may be done at the same time. It is often chosen when prolapse has returned after earlier surgery.
Success rates for support are high and the repair tends to last. Mesh-related problems such as erosion, pain or infection can occur but are not common. Results depend on prolapse severity, tissue quality, your weight, smoking, and the surgeon's experience. Urinary leakage may need separate treatment.
Plan for two nights in hospital and about four weeks of recovery, avoiding heavy lifting and straining. Bring examination reports and any records of previous prolapse or mesh surgery. Arrange follow-up with your own gynaecologist or urogynaecologist, and pelvic floor physiotherapy.
Usually a good fit if
- Vaginal vault prolapse after hysterectomy, or uterine prolapse in a woman who wants to keep her womb, causing a bulge or pressure.
- Prolapse that has returned after a previous vaginal repair.
- Women who are sexually active and want the best-lasting support, as sacrocolpopexy has good long-term results.
- A woman who is fit for general anaesthesia and keyhole gas inflation.
May need to wait if
- Wishing to have children in future.
- Serious heart or lung disease that makes anaesthesia or the head-down position unsafe.
- Active pelvic infection, or smoking and diabetes that raise the risk of mesh exposure and need optimisation.
- Mild prolapse without symptoms, which needs no surgery.
How to prepare
- Have a pelvic examination, urodynamic tests if you leak urine, and a smear, so the surgeon can plan the combined repair.
- Ask whether vaginal oestrogen is advised beforehand, and follow only your doctor's instructions.
- Treat constipation, urine infection and chronic cough, and stop smoking to reduce mesh exposure risk.
- Ask your doctor about blood thinners and aspirin, and follow only the instructions you are given.
- Confirm that you have finished childbearing and ask about travel timing.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is sacrocolpopexy the best option for my prolapse, compared with a vaginal repair?
- What mesh will you use, and what is the chance of mesh exposure or pain?
- How many sacrocolpopexies do you perform each year, and how often do you convert to open surgery?
- Will you also fix the front and back vaginal walls or treat urine leakage?
- Will you keep my womb and cervix, and why or why not?
- What follow-up is needed at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Mesh used without a discussion of its risks and of non-mesh alternatives.
- No assessment of bladder and bowel function before surgery.
- A surgeon doing very few such operations.
- No plan to examine you and check for mesh exposure after surgery.
Questions about Sacrocolpopexy (Robotic / Laparoscopic) abroad
Which country is cheapest for Sacrocolpopexy (Robotic / Laparoscopic)?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($9,600), Thailand ($11,670), Turkey ($13,808), out of 9 countries we compare.
How long will I stay in hospital for Sacrocolpopexy (Robotic / Laparoscopic)?
Most patients spend about 2 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 28 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
Is the mesh safe?
Abdominal mesh sacrocolpopexy has good long-term evidence, but mesh can occasionally erode into the vagina or cause pain. Ask your surgeon for their experience.
Will the prolapse return?
Recurrence is lower than with many vaginal repairs, but not impossible. Avoiding heavy lifting and constipation helps.
Will it affect sex?
Many women feel better after repair. Rarely, mesh causes discomfort. Report pain or unusual discharge.
Can the womb be kept?
Yes, a sacrohysteropexy is possible for selected women. Discuss this with your surgeon.
