About Laparoscopic Myomectomy

Under general anaesthesia the surgeon makes small cuts in the abdomen, opens the womb wall over each fibroid, shells it out and repairs the defect in layers with stitches. The fibroids are then removed in a bag or by contained morcellation. Number, size and position of fibroids determine whether keyhole surgery is suitable.

Heavy bleeding and pressure symptoms usually improve and many women conceive afterwards. Fibroids can regrow, especially in younger women or with several at the start. Results depend on the fibroids' number and location, the quality of the uterine repair, and the surgeon's laparoscopic suturing skill. Future deliveries may be by caesarean if the cavity was entered.

Plan for two nights in hospital and about a month of recovery. Bring MRI or ultrasound reports. Ask your surgeon how long to wait before trying to conceive, usually several months, and arrange follow-up scans and antenatal advice with your own doctor.

Usually a good fit if

  • Fibroids causing heavy periods, pelvic pressure, pain, or bladder and bowel symptoms.
  • A woman who wants to keep her womb, particularly to try for pregnancy.
  • A limited number of fibroids of manageable size, usually fewer than about five and under about 10 cm.
  • Fibroids thought to be affecting fertility or causing miscarriage.

May need to wait if

  • Very large or very numerous fibroids, where open surgery or a different approach may be safer.
  • Suspected cancer of the womb muscle (sarcoma), because morcellation could spread it.
  • Pregnancy, active pelvic infection, or severe untreated anaemia.
  • Heart or lung disease that makes anaesthesia or gas inflation risky until optimised.
How to prepare
  1. Have a pelvic MRI or ultrasound to map the number, size and position of fibroids, and bring reports.
  2. Ask whether hormone injections or tablets are advised beforehand to shrink fibroids or correct anaemia, and follow only your doctor's instructions.
  3. Have a blood count and iron treatment if needed; blood should be available if bleeding is expected.
  4. Ask your doctor about blood thinners and aspirin, and follow only the instructions you are given.
  5. Fast as instructed, and confirm with the team when it is safe to fly and when to attempt pregnancy.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Is keyhole, robotic or open surgery best for my fibroids, and why?
  2. How will you remove the fibroids from the abdomen, and will you use a containment bag?
  3. How many laparoscopic myomectomies do you perform every year, and how often is blood transfusion needed?
  4. How will the womb scar be repaired, and will I need a caesarean section in future?
  5. When can I try to conceive?
  6. How will you check for cancer risk before surgery?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Uncontained power morcellation without discussing the risk of spreading an unsuspected cancer.
  • No MRI or ultrasound mapping before surgery.
  • No discussion of the womb scar and future delivery plans.
  • Promises that fibroids will never grow back.

Questions about Laparoscopic Myomectomy abroad

Which country is cheapest for Laparoscopic Myomectomy?

The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($8,205), Thailand ($9,628), Turkey ($11,955), out of 9 countries we compare.

How long will I stay in hospital for Laparoscopic Myomectomy?

Most patients spend about 2 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 28 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.

Can fibroids come back?

New fibroids can grow over time, especially in younger women or those who had many. Follow-up ultrasound can detect them.

When can I try to get pregnant?

Many surgeons advise waiting about 3 to 6 months so the womb scar can heal, depending on how deep the fibroids were.

Will I need a caesarean?

It depends on how deeply the womb was cut. If the cavity was entered or fibroids were deep, a planned caesarean is often advised.

Is keyhole surgery as effective as open surgery?

In suitable cases it has similar results with less pain and faster recovery. Large or numerous fibroids may need an open approach.
