About Radical Nephrectomy (Robotic)

Through a few small incisions, the surgeon controls robotic arms to free the kidney, divide its artery, vein and ureter, and remove the specimen in a bag through a slightly larger cut. Lymph nodes are taken if they look enlarged. It is chosen over partial nephrectomy when the tumour is large, central or invades nearby structures.

Outcomes depend on the stage and grade of the cancer, whether it has spread, and the health of the remaining kidney, which usually compensates well. Keyhole surgery tends to cause less pain and a quicker return to activity than open surgery. Kidney function is checked afterwards, as having one kidney slightly raises long-term risk of reduced function.

Expect a hospital stay of two to three days, and plan on avoiding heavy lifting for around six weeks. Stay nearby until the catheter and any drain are out and you are cleared to travel. Bring CT or MRI scans and blood tests, and arrange regular kidney function tests and surveillance scans with your doctor at home.

Usually a good fit if

  • Kidney cancer too large or centrally placed for removing only the tumour (partial nephrectomy).
  • A healthy opposite kidney with good function.
  • Fit for general anaesthesia and keyhole surgery.

May need to wait if

  • Poor function of the other kidney may favour kidney-sparing surgery.
  • Cancer spread to distant organs often needs drug therapy, sometimes with surgery.
  • Tumour extending into major veins may need an open approach and specialist planning.
How to prepare
  1. Bring CT or MRI scans and kidney function tests, since the remaining kidney must be healthy.
  2. Ask your doctor about adjusting blood thinners, blood pressure and diabetes medicines before surgery.
  3. Tell the team about earlier kidney disease, stones or surgery and any use of painkillers affecting the kidneys.
  4. Plan breathing exercises and early walking, and stop smoking to support healing.
  5. Arrange help at home and confirm when it is safe to fly.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Can the tumour be treated by removing only part of the kidney instead?
  2. Is the adrenal gland or any lymph node removal needed?
  3. How many robotic kidney operations do you perform each year?
  4. How will my remaining kidney function be checked?
  5. Is there a risk of converting to open surgery?
  6. What follow-up scans will I need and where?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • The whole kidney is removed without discussing kidney-sparing options where suitable.
  • No kidney function test is done before surgery.
  • Surgeon cannot say how many kidney cancer operations they perform.
  • No follow-up scanning plan is offered.

Questions about Radical Nephrectomy (Robotic) abroad

Which country is cheapest for Radical Nephrectomy (Robotic)?

The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($12,740), Thailand ($16,418), Turkey ($19,338), out of 9 countries we compare.

How long will I stay in hospital for Radical Nephrectomy (Robotic)?

Most patients spend about 3 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 28 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.

Can I live with one kidney?

Yes. A healthy remaining kidney normally takes over, though protecting it by avoiding kidney-harming drugs and staying hydrated is wise.

Will I need more treatment?

Often not for early cancers. Pathology guides follow-up, and drug treatment may be advised for higher-risk disease.

Is robotic surgery safer than open?

Cancer results are similar; keyhole surgery usually means less pain, smaller scars and quicker recovery, though large tumours may need open surgery.

Why might the adrenal gland be removed?

It sits next to the kidney. It is removed when scans suggest involvement or the tumour is high and close to it.
