About Rhinoplasty

The surgeon reshapes bone and cartilage through an open approach, with a small cut across the columella, or a closed approach with incisions inside the nostrils. Cartilage grafts may add support, and the septum can be straightened at the same time. Surgery takes two to three hours under general anaesthesia, and a splint is placed afterwards.

Most swelling settles within a few weeks, but the tip can keep refining for a year or more. Results depend on skin thickness, underlying structure, healing, and the surgeon's experience and plan. A good result improves balance with the face rather than imitating a template, and a small share of patients need a revision.

Plan about ten days near the clinic so the splint can be removed and early healing checked. Avoid glasses resting on the nose for a few weeks and avoid contact sports for around two months. Bring clear photographs and agree who you contact about concerns once you are home.

Usually a good fit if

  • You are over about 17 or 18, with nasal growth complete.
  • You have a specific concern about shape, a hump or a tip, or a breathing issue.
  • You are in good general health and do not smoke.
  • You have realistic expectations and understand healing takes many months.

May need to wait if

  • Nasal growth is not yet complete.
  • Active smoking, cocaine use or chronic nasal disease not yet treated.
  • Body dysmorphic concerns or unrealistic expectations.
  • Uncontrolled medical conditions or bleeding disorders.
How to prepare
  1. Have realistic goals and bring photos of noses you like and, if relevant, of your nose before any earlier operation.
  2. Review blood thinners, aspirin, anti-inflammatories and supplements with your doctor, and stop smoking as advised.
  3. Tell your surgeon about breathing problems, sinus disease, allergies and previous nasal injury.
  4. Have blood tests and any imaging your surgeon requests, and arrange a companion.
  5. Plan to stay near the clinic for about a week, until the splint is removed.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Will you use an open or closed approach, and why for my nose?
  2. Do you plan to use cartilage grafts, and where will the cartilage come from?
  3. Do I also need septum surgery to improve my breathing?
  4. How do you use imaging or simulation, and how closely will the result match it?
  5. How long does swelling last, and when will I see the final shape?
  6. Who can review me at home if there is a problem?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Computer images presented as a guarantee of the result.
  • A surgeon who proposes the same nose for everyone.
  • No discussion of breathing function or septum.
  • No plan for revision surgery if the result is not as expected.

Questions about Rhinoplasty abroad

How long will I stay in hospital for Rhinoplasty?

Most patients spend about 1 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 21 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.

Is rhinoplasty painful?

Most people describe pressure and blockage more than sharp pain. Painkillers control discomfort for a few days.

When will I see the final result?

The main change is visible once the splint is off, but fine swelling can take up to a year to settle, especially at the tip.

Will I be able to breathe normally?

Breathing is often blocked for a week or two because of swelling. If your septum is corrected, breathing can end up better than before.

When can I fly home?

Many surgeons advise waiting about a week, until the splint is out. Your surgeon will confirm for you.
