About Neck Lift
Incisions are made behind the ears and sometimes under the chin. The surgeon may remove fat, tighten the platysma muscle bands, and trim excess skin. Techniques range from limited lifts to a full platysmaplasty, and the operation is often combined with a facelift or chin work. General anaesthesia is typical, and surgery takes two to four hours.
Neck definition improves once swelling resolves, and the final contour appears over a few months. Results depend on skin elasticity, the depth of the banding, and your anatomy, for example a low hyoid bone can limit sharpness. A neck lift does not stop further ageing, so results last for years rather than a lifetime.
Expect bruising and tightness for a couple of weeks, with a support garment worn for a period. Plan to stay near the clinic for about a week and ask when it is safe to fly. Keep your head elevated while sleeping, avoid heavy exercise, and bring a scarf or high collar for privacy.
Usually a good fit if
- You have loose neck skin, visible platysma bands or a blunted jawline.
- Your skin retains some elasticity and you are in good health.
- Your concerns are mainly in the neck rather than the cheeks or brow.
- You accept scars around the ears and under the chin.
May need to wait if
- Active smoking, which raises the risk of skin loss.
- Bleeding disorders or uncontrolled blood pressure.
- A heavy neck from excess weight that should be treated first.
- Unrealistic expectations or no capacity to rest afterwards.
How to prepare
- Review blood thinners, aspirin, anti-inflammatories and supplements with your doctor, and stop smoking as advised.
- Have blood tests and a medical check-up, and keep blood pressure well controlled.
- Tell your surgeon about thyroid problems, previous neck surgery and any radiation to the neck.
- Bring a front-opening top, a scarf and your chin garment, and arrange a companion.
- Plan to stay near the clinic for at least a week.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Do I need a neck lift alone, or would a facelift or fat removal alone give a better result?
- Will you tighten the platysma muscle and treat fat under the muscle?
- Where will my incisions be, and will I have drains?
- How do you reduce the risk of haematoma and nerve injury?
- How long should I wear the support garment, and when can I resume exercise?
- Whom do I contact at home if one side swells quickly?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Rapid swelling or severe one-sided pain after surgery with no plan for emergency review.
- A surgeon who cannot explain the difference between liposuction and a neck lift.
- No discussion of nerve-injury risk.
- Before-and-after images from stock sources.
