About Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

After a planning CT scan, sometimes with MRI, physicists and oncologists outline the tumour and organs to protect, and a computer calculates beams of varying intensity. You lie still, often in a mask or cushion, while the machine moves around you. Each session lasts about 15 to 30 minutes, usually daily on weekdays, and may be combined with chemotherapy.

IMRT lowers dose to nearby organs, which can reduce side effects such as dry mouth, bowel irritation or urinary symptoms. Cancer control depends on type, stage, total dose and combined treatment, and on accurate planning and daily positioning. Tiredness and skin reactions are common and ease within weeks after the course ends.

A full course often takes several weeks, so plan to stay near the treatment centre for its duration, or ask about shorter schedules for your cancer. Bring scans, pathology and earlier treatment records. Arrange skin care, blood tests and follow-up imaging with your home oncologist after the final session.

Usually a good fit if

  • Cancers near sensitive structures where dose sparing matters, such as head and neck, prostate, cervix, brain or breast.
  • A radiation oncologist has recommended radiation as primary, post-operative or combined treatment.
  • Able to lie still and attend daily sessions.

May need to wait if

  • Previous radiation to the area may limit additional dose.
  • Active infection or unstable health may need treatment before starting.
  • Inability to lie still or follow positioning instructions affects accuracy.
How to prepare
  1. Bring staging scans, biopsy reports and any previous radiation records for the planning team.
  2. Have a dental check before head and neck treatment; extractions must be completed in advance.
  3. Follow bladder or bowel preparation instructions for pelvic treatment on scan and treatment days.
  4. Plan accommodation near the centre for the whole course and ask about nutrition support.
  5. Ask your doctor whether chemotherapy or hormone therapy will be given alongside.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. How will IMRT spare the organs near my tumour?
  2. What total dose and number of sessions are planned?
  3. What side effects will I have and how are they managed?
  4. Will chemotherapy or hormone therapy be combined?
  5. How is the plan checked before the first session?
  6. What records will I get for follow-up near home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • No planning scan or dose plan is explained before starting.
  • Doctor cannot say which organs are being protected.
  • No named radiation oncologist or physicist for your case.
  • Treatment course is shortened or altered without a clinical reason.

Questions about Radiation Therapy (IMRT) abroad

Which country is cheapest for Radiation Therapy (IMRT)?

The lowest typical hospital prices are in South Korea ($3,737), Thailand ($4,001), Singapore ($4,450), out of 8 countries we compare.

Does IMRT hurt?

The treatment itself does not hurt. Side effects such as skin reddening, fatigue and local irritation develop over days to weeks.

How is IMRT different from older radiation?

It varies beam intensity across many angles so the dose follows the tumour shape, reducing dose to nearby organs and some side effects.

Can I work during treatment?

Many people can with flexibility, though tiredness builds. Plan lighter days toward the end of the course.

Will I be radioactive?

No. External radiation does not make you radioactive.
