About PGT-A (Aneuploidy Screening)
PGT-A is added to an IVF cycle with ICSI. When embryos reach the blastocyst stage on day five or six, an embryologist uses a laser to remove a few cells from the outer layer that forms the placenta. The cells are analysed in a genetics laboratory, usually with next-generation sequencing, and the embryos are frozen while waiting. A chromosomally normal embryo is then chosen for a later frozen transfer.
Transferring a normal embryo may lower miscarriage risk and shorten the time to a successful pregnancy, especially in older women. However, evidence of a higher cumulative live birth rate is debated, and not all embryos give a clear result. Mosaic results need careful counselling, and a normal result still does not guarantee pregnancy.
Because transfer is usually delayed until the results are back, you may travel twice: once for stimulation and collection, and later for the frozen transfer. Alternatively, ask whether embryos can be shipped or transferred at a clinic near home. Bring previous genetic or miscarriage reports, and ask how the clinic handles mosaic embryos.
Usually a good fit if
- Women of advanced maternal age undergoing IVF.
- Recurrent miscarriage that may be related to embryo chromosome errors.
- Repeated implantation failure after good-quality embryo transfers.
- Couples wishing to choose a single embryo to transfer with higher confidence.
May need to wait if
- Few embryos reaching blastocyst stage, where testing may leave nothing to transfer.
- Expecting certainty, since PGT-A cannot detect all genetic problems and mosaic results are difficult to interpret.
- Medical conditions in the woman that need optimisation before IVF.
- Using PGT-A for sex selection where it is not permitted by local law.
How to prepare
- You need a complete IVF plan with ICSI, so hormone tests, scans and screening for both partners are required first.
- Genetic counselling before testing to explain what PGT-A can and cannot detect.
- Review medicines with your doctor and change nothing yourself.
- Plan for a frozen embryo transfer in a later cycle, which may mean a second trip.
- Bring previous miscarriage or karyotype reports.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is PGT-A recommended for my age and history, and what is the evidence?
- How does the laboratory report mosaic embryos, and would you transfer them?
- What is the false positive rate, and could a normal embryo be discarded?
- Which method of testing do you use, and is the laboratory accredited?
- What if all embryos are abnormal?
- Can the frozen embryo transfer be done at a clinic at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Offering PGT-A to every patient as routine without explaining limits.
- Guaranteeing a healthy baby.
- No genetic counselling before or after the results.
- Unaccredited testing laboratory.
- No explanation of mosaic results.
Questions about PGT-A (Aneuploidy Screening) abroad
Which country is cheapest for PGT-A (Aneuploidy Screening)?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($3,945), Thailand ($4,773), Turkey ($5,793), out of 9 countries we compare.
Does PGT-A improve the chance of having a baby?
It may reduce miscarriage and shorten time to pregnancy in some groups, such as older women, but it does not raise the overall number of babies from a cycle in all patients.
Can the biopsy harm the embryo?
Trophectoderm biopsy by experienced embryologists is considered safe, but a small risk of reduced viability cannot be excluded.
Do I still need prenatal testing?
Yes. PGT-A is a screening test, so antenatal scans and testing are still advised.
What are mosaic embryos?
These contain a mix of normal and abnormal cells. Some can result in healthy births, but the decision needs specialist counselling.
