About Natural Cycle IVF

Scans and blood tests follow your natural cycle from early on. When the lead follicle is mature, a trigger injection may be given, with a medicine to prevent early ovulation. The egg is collected through the vagina under ultrasound with light sedation, fertilised in the laboratory, and the embryo is transferred a few days later. If no egg is found or it fails to fertilise, the cycle is cancelled.

Only one egg means the chance of success per cycle is lower than with stimulated IVF, and cancellation is more common, so several attempts are often needed. The approach avoids most drug side effects and ovarian hyperstimulation. Results depend heavily on the woman's age and egg quality, and it generally works best with regular cycles.

Timing is set by your own ovulation, so you may need to stay for one to two weeks with frequent short visits for scans and blood tests. Bring previous cycle records and hormone results. Have a plan to repeat the attempt if the first cycle is cancelled, and check your return flights allow some flexibility.

Usually a good fit if

  • Women who cannot take stimulation drugs, for example because of previous hyperstimulation or certain hormone-sensitive conditions.
  • Women with regular ovulation who prefer a drug-free approach.
  • Poor responders for whom stimulation yields little extra benefit.
  • Religious or ethical wish to limit the number of embryos created.

May need to wait if

  • Irregular or absent ovulation, which makes natural timing unreliable.
  • Severe male factor or tubal disease where a single egg limits the chance of success.
  • Need for multiple embryos, such as for genetic testing.
  • Not accepting the high chance of cycle cancellation.
How to prepare
  1. Baseline hormone tests, a pelvic scan and a clear record of regular cycles.
  2. Semen analysis and infection screening for both partners.
  3. Review medicines with your doctor; do not change them yourself.
  4. Be ready to attend for scans at short notice, as timing depends on your own cycle.
  5. Bring previous reports and arrange accompaniment for egg collection.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. How likely is it that my cycle will be cancelled, and what happens then?
  2. What are the chances of obtaining an egg that fertilises?
  3. Do you use any medication to prevent premature ovulation?
  4. Will the embryo be transferred fresh or frozen?
  5. How many cycles might I need to match one conventional IVF cycle?
  6. What monitoring can I do at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Natural cycle IVF sold as equivalent to full stimulation for all women.
  • No scans or hormone testing to time the egg collection.
  • No honest discussion of cancellation rates.
  • No clear explanation of how premature ovulation is handled.
  • Pressure to pay for many cycles in advance.

Questions about Natural Cycle IVF abroad

Which country is cheapest for Natural Cycle IVF?

The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($4,095), Thailand ($4,600), Turkey ($5,558), out of 9 countries we compare.

Why might my cycle be cancelled?

Because only one egg is produced, cancellation can happen if ovulation occurs early, no egg is found, or the egg fails to fertilise.

Is natural cycle IVF painless?

Egg collection is brief, usually with local anaesthesia or light sedation, and you may have mild cramping afterwards.

Is it gentler on the body?

It avoids stimulation drugs, so side effects are fewer, but success per cycle is generally lower.

Can I freeze the embryo?

Yes, if it is suitable, although many natural cycles use fresh transfer.
