About Laparoscopic Myomectomy

Using a camera and fine instruments placed through small abdominal cuts, the surgeon opens the womb wall over each fibroid, removes it and closes the defect in layers. Robotic assistance is sometimes used to help with suturing. Large or numerous fibroids, or ones deep in the wall, may mean open surgery is safer.

Symptoms such as heavy bleeding and pressure usually ease, and pregnancy is possible afterwards, often with a recommended wait of some months. Fibroids can grow back. Outcomes depend on their number, size and position, how well the uterine wall is repaired, and the surgeon's experience with keyhole suturing.

Plan for two nights in hospital and about a month to recover fully. Bring scan and MRI reports and your fertility history. Discuss timing of pregnancy and delivery method, which may be by caesarean, and arrange follow-up with your own gynaecologist after you return.

Usually a good fit if

  • Fibroids causing heavy periods, pelvic pressure, pain, or bladder and bowel symptoms.
  • A woman who wants to keep her womb, particularly to try for pregnancy.
  • A manageable number and size of fibroids that can be removed safely by keyhole surgery.
  • Fibroids that may be affecting fertility or causing repeated miscarriage.

May need to wait if

  • Very large or numerous fibroids, where open surgery may be needed.
  • Suspected cancer of the womb muscle (sarcoma), because cutting the specimen into pieces could spread it.
  • Pregnancy, active pelvic infection or severe untreated anaemia.
  • Heart or lung disease that makes anaesthesia or gas inflation risky until optimised.
How to prepare
  1. Have a pelvic MRI or ultrasound to map the size, number and position of fibroids, and bring all reports.
  2. Ask whether hormone treatment is advised beforehand to shrink fibroids or correct anaemia, and follow only your doctor's instructions.
  3. Have a blood count and iron treatment as advised; blood may be arranged in case of heavy bleeding.
  4. Ask your doctor about blood thinners and aspirin, and follow only the instructions you are given.
  5. Fast as instructed, and discuss when it is safe to fly and when you may try to conceive.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Is keyhole, robotic or open surgery best for my fibroids?
  2. How will fibroids be removed, and will you use a containment bag?
  3. How many myomectomies do you perform each year, and how often is a transfusion needed?
  4. How will the womb be repaired, and will I need a caesarean section later?
  5. When can I try to conceive?
  6. What is the chance fibroids will return?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Uncontained morcellation without discussing the risk of an unsuspected cancer.
  • No MRI or ultrasound mapping before surgery.
  • No mention of the womb scar and delivery planning.
  • Promises that fibroids will never grow back.

Questions about Laparoscopic Myomectomy abroad

Which country is cheapest for Laparoscopic Myomectomy?

The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($5,324), Turkey ($7,491), Saudi Arabia ($12,278), out of 4 countries we compare.

How long will I stay in hospital for Laparoscopic Myomectomy?

Most patients spend about 2 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 30 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.

Can fibroids come back?

New fibroids can appear, especially in younger women or those who had many. Follow-up ultrasound can detect them.

When can I get pregnant?

Most surgeons advise waiting about 3 to 6 months for the womb scar to heal, depending on fibroid depth.

Will I need a caesarean?

It depends on how deeply the womb was cut. If fibroids were deep or the cavity opened, a planned caesarean is often advised.

Is this the same as removing the womb?

No. A myomectomy removes fibroids only. The womb stays, so periods continue, unlike a hysterectomy.
