About Mini-IVF (Mild Stimulation)

Mini-IVF follows the same steps as conventional IVF, but you take tablets such as clomiphene or letrozole, often with low-dose injections, for around eight to ten days. Scans and blood tests track the few follicles that develop, and a trigger injection is given before egg collection under light sedation. The eggs are fertilised, and an embryo is transferred or frozen.

Fewer eggs are collected, so each cycle usually gives fewer embryos than conventional IVF, and more than one cycle may be needed. The main benefits are lower drug doses, less risk of ovarian hyperstimulation and fewer side effects. Results depend mostly on the woman's age and ovarian reserve, and it may not suit everyone, especially younger women with good reserve.

Plan roughly two weeks near the clinic for monitoring, collection and transfer, with fewer scan visits in some programmes. Bring your hormone tests, such as AMH, and previous IVF reports. Rest after egg collection and arrange for someone to go with you. The pregnancy test comes about two weeks after transfer.

Usually a good fit if

  • Low ovarian reserve or poor response to high-dose stimulation in earlier cycles.
  • Risk of ovarian hyperstimulation, such as polycystic ovaries.
  • Wish for a lower-drug approach with fewer injections and side effects.
  • Women who prefer fewer embryos and a lower risk of multiple pregnancy.

May need to wait if

  • Where a high number of embryos is needed, for example for genetic testing or banking, mini-IVF may not suit.
  • Tubal blockage or severe male factor needing additional techniques that your doctor must plan.
  • Uncontrolled medical conditions that make pregnancy unsafe.
  • Expecting the same number of eggs as conventional stimulation.
How to prepare
  1. Hormone tests including AMH and a baseline antral follicle count scan to confirm that mild stimulation is suitable.
  2. Semen analysis and infection screening for both partners.
  3. Review medicines with your doctor and learn how to give any injections.
  4. Plan roughly two weeks near the clinic for scans, collection and transfer.
  5. Bring earlier IVF cycle reports so the doctor can compare responses.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Why is mini-IVF recommended in my case rather than conventional IVF?
  2. How many eggs do you expect, and what is the chance that no egg is collected?
  3. Which drugs will I use, and how many injections?
  4. Will embryos be transferred fresh or frozen?
  5. How many cycles might I need to achieve the same chance as one conventional cycle?
  6. Which tests can be done at home during stimulation?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Mini-IVF presented as having equal success to conventional IVF for everyone.
  • No individual assessment of ovarian reserve.
  • No monitoring scans during stimulation.
  • Unclear explanation of cycle cancellation if no follicles develop.
  • Pressure to repeat cycles without a review.

Questions about Mini-IVF (Mild Stimulation) abroad

Which country is cheapest for Mini-IVF (Mild Stimulation)?

The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($5,103), Thailand ($6,300), Turkey ($7,675), out of 9 countries we compare.

Is mini-IVF as effective as conventional IVF?

Per cycle, it usually gives fewer eggs and so may give lower rates, though results per embryo are similar. Several cycles may be needed, so discuss realistic expectations.

Are there fewer side effects?

Generally yes. Lower drug doses reduce bloating and the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation, though you may still have some cramping.

Can I do ICSI with mini-IVF?

Yes, if the sperm quality requires it.

Is it suitable if I have PCOS?

Sometimes, because gentle stimulation lowers hyperstimulation risk. Your specialist will decide.
