About Lower Blepharoplasty

The surgeon works either through an incision just below the lashes or from inside the lower eyelid, which leaves no visible scar. Fat may be removed or moved into the hollow beneath the eye, and excess skin is trimmed carefully so the eyelid is not pulled down. Additional support to the eyelid is sometimes needed in lax lids.

Bruising and swelling settle over about two weeks, while the final appearance takes a few months. Results depend on skin quality, the amount of fat, and the surgeon's caution in preserving the eyelid's position. Dark pigmentation under the eyes and fine wrinkles may remain, since the operation does not change skin colour or texture.

Plan about a week to ten days before you are comfortable in public and before sutures come out, and avoid contact lenses for a short period. Bring cold compresses, lubricating eye drops and sunglasses. Ask who handles any concerns after you return, as eyelid problems need prompt review.

Usually a good fit if

  • You have under-eye bags, hollows or excess lower-lid skin that bothers you.
  • Your eyelids have good tone and no marked lower-lid laxity.
  • You have realistic expectations and are in good general health.
  • You do not have active eye disease.

May need to wait if

  • Active eye infection, uncontrolled thyroid eye disease or severe dry eye.
  • Poor lower-lid tone (a positive snap test), which raises the risk of the lid pulling down.
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure or a bleeding disorder.
  • Expecting it to remove dark circles caused by pigment rather than puffiness.
How to prepare
  1. Tell your surgeon about dry eyes, eye surgery, contact lens use and any thyroid eye problems; an eye examination may be advised.
  2. Review blood thinners, aspirin, fish oil, vitamin E and herbal supplements with your doctor before surgery.
  3. Stop smoking as advised, since it slows healing around the eyelids.
  4. Bring sunglasses, lubricating eye drops and cold packs, and arrange a companion for the first days.
  5. Ask about fitness to fly and plan to stay near the clinic until stitches are out.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Do you recommend an inside-the-lid or an external incision for me, and why?
  2. Will you remove fat or reposition it to fill the tear trough?
  3. Do you need to tighten my lower lid to reduce the risk of it pulling down?
  4. How do you manage dry eyes and what should I do if my eyes will not close fully?
  5. When are stitches removed, and when can I wear contact lenses and make-up?
  6. Whom do I contact at home if I have pain, swelling or changes in my vision?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • No eye examination or discussion of dry eyes before surgery.
  • A plan to remove a large amount of fat from every patient, leading to a hollow, aged look.
  • Pressure to combine upper and lower surgery without explaining the added risk.
  • Vague answers about managing sudden pain or vision changes.

Questions about Lower Blepharoplasty abroad

Which country is cheapest for Lower Blepharoplasty?

The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($3,298), Thailand ($3,998), Turkey ($4,785), out of 9 countries we compare.

Will I have visible scars?

With the inside-the-lid approach there is no visible skin scar. External incisions sit just under the lash line and usually fade to a fine, faint line.

Can this remove dark circles?

It helps puffiness and shadowing from hollows, but dark circles caused by pigment or thin skin may stay. Skin treatments can be discussed separately.

What if my eyes feel dry afterwards?

Temporary dryness or watering is common after surgery. Lubricating drops and ointment help, and you should tell your surgeon if symptoms persist or your lids do not close fully.

How long do the results last?

The removal of fat is long-lasting, though ageing continues. Many people enjoy the improvement for ten years or more.
