About Lobectomy (Lung)

Through either a standard chest incision or minimally invasive methods, video-assisted or robotic, the surgeon removes the affected lobe along with nearby lymph nodes for staging. The blood vessels and airway of that lobe are divided and sealed. Chest drains are left for a few days. Smaller tumours are sometimes treated with segmentectomy instead, which removes less lung.

Results depend on the cancer stage, whether lymph nodes are involved, and your lung function and general fitness, since the remaining lung must cope. Keyhole techniques generally mean less pain and a quicker recovery. Possible complications include air leak, pneumonia and irregular heartbeat. Chemotherapy or immunotherapy may be recommended depending on the final pathology.

Plan for a hospital stay of about five to seven days and a period of breathing exercises and walking. Wait for your surgeon's clearance before flying, as air travel soon after chest surgery can be unsafe. Bring CT and PET reports and pathology, and stop smoking beforehand. Arrange follow-up scans and a chest check at home.

Usually a good fit if

  • Early-stage lung cancer confined to one lobe, or a nodule suspicious for cancer that cannot be diagnosed otherwise.
  • Adequate lung function to tolerate losing a lobe.
  • Fit for general anaesthesia after assessment of heart and lungs.

May need to wait if

  • Poor lung function, such as severe COPD, may make lobectomy unsafe; smaller resections or radiation may be better.
  • Cancer that has spread to distant sites or involves the chest wall extensively usually changes the plan.
  • Recent heart attack or uncontrolled heart disease needs treatment first.
How to prepare
  1. Bring CT, PET-CT, biopsy and any brain MRI results so staging is complete.
  2. Expect lung function tests and a heart check to confirm you can manage with less lung.
  3. Stop smoking at once; ask your doctor for help, as it greatly reduces complications.
  4. Practise breathing exercises taught by the physiotherapist before surgery.
  5. Ask your doctor about adjusting blood thinners and inhalers before surgery.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Will you use keyhole or open surgery, and what is the chance of converting to open?
  2. How will you check lymph nodes for staging?
  3. How is my lung function after surgery estimated?
  4. How long will chest drains stay and what pain control is used?
  5. Will I need chemotherapy, immunotherapy or radiation afterwards?
  6. What do I do if I become breathless at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • No full staging, such as PET-CT, before proposing surgery.
  • No pulmonary function testing before lung resection.
  • No physiotherapy or pain-control plan after surgery.
  • Surgeon cannot say how many lung resections they do each year.

Questions about Lobectomy (Lung) abroad

Which country is cheapest for Lobectomy (Lung)?

The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($17,078), Thailand ($19,848), Turkey ($24,000), out of 9 countries we compare.

How long will I stay in hospital for Lobectomy (Lung)?

Most patients spend about 6 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 42 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.

Will I be short of breath afterwards?

Many people notice mild breathlessness at first, then adapt. Removing a lobe reduces lung capacity less than expected because remaining lung expands.

Is keyhole surgery as effective?

For suitable early tumours, yes. VATS and robotic approaches give similar cancer control with less pain and shorter recovery, but the surgeon decides based on tumour position.

Will I need more treatment?

Possibly. Pathology determines whether chemotherapy or immunotherapy is advised, depending on stage and node involvement.

When can I fly?

Usually after chest X-ray is clear and any air leak has resolved, often around two to four weeks. Your surgeon will confirm.
