What Heart Valve Replacement patients say
Two surgeons in Karachi said valve replacement. Max Saket said the mitral valve could be repaired, preserving native tissue. Did a minimally invasive approach. Off blood thinners, no prosthetic valve long-term.
Two surgeons in Boston had quoted me for valve replacement. A friend who'd done a similar trip suggested I check Medanta first. They specifically said 'we should be able to repair, not replace.' That mattered to me — repair means no…
Diagnosed in my early 30s, monitored for years. By 38 the regurgitation was severe and surgery couldn't wait. Toronto wait was 7 months. Apollo Delhi accepted my case in 4 weeks. The repair team at Apollo does 200+ mitral cases a year.…
Re-do surgery — my first valve from 22 years ago was failing. French specialist said complexity warranted a top program. Charité Berlin took the case. The pre-op workup was extensive (5 days), surgery 8 hours including aortic root…
About Heart Valve Replacement
Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon usually opens the chest through the breastbone and connects you to a heart-lung machine. The diseased valve is removed and a replacement is stitched in. Mechanical valves last very long but need lifelong warfarin, while tissue valves from animal tissue avoid it for most people but may wear out within 10 to 20 years. Some valves can now be placed through a catheter.
Breathlessness, tiredness and chest symptoms usually improve in the weeks and months after surgery. Outcomes depend on which valve is affected, your heart's pumping strength, age, other health conditions and the surgeon's experience. The choice of valve type involves trade-offs that should be discussed with you in detail.
Plan to stay near the hospital for about ten days and allow several weeks before returning to heavy activity. Bring your echocardiogram and angiogram reports. If you have a mechanical valve, arrange regular INR blood tests at home beforehand. Carry a valve card and tell your dentist, as antibiotic cover may be advised.
Usually a good fit if
- Severe aortic, mitral or other valve disease causing breathlessness, chest pain, fainting or heart enlargement.
- A valve too damaged to repair, particularly severe stenosis or calcification.
- Fitness for open-heart surgery on assessment.
- For tissue valves, older age or inability to take warfarin.
May need to wait if
- Valve disease that can be repaired, which usually gives better long-term results.
- Severe lung, kidney or liver disease, or other conditions that make surgery too risky.
- Active infection other than endocarditis.
- Inability to take warfarin reliably if a mechanical valve is planned.
How to prepare
- Bring echocardiograms, angiograms and ECGs; the team will also arrange blood tests, dental review and coronary assessment.
- Treat dental infections before surgery, since bacteria can infect a new valve.
- Review blood thinners, heart and diabetes medicines with your doctor, who will tell you what to adjust.
- Discuss mechanical versus tissue valve with your surgeon, including pregnancy plans and ability to take warfarin.
- Plan a long stay, rehabilitation and INR monitoring at home.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Which valve is being replaced, and could it be repaired instead?
- Mechanical or tissue valve for me, and why?
- What warfarin target range and monitoring schedule will I follow?
- How many valve operations does your team perform yearly?
- If a tissue valve wears out, what are my options, including catheter-based valve-in-valve?
- What antibiotic precautions do I need for dental work?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Valve replacement recommended without echo or discussion of repair.
- No explanation of mechanical versus tissue trade-offs.
- No cardiac intensive care on site.
- No plan for INR monitoring at home.
- Failure to mention dental and endocarditis precautions.
Questions about Heart Valve Replacement abroad
Which country is cheapest for Heart Valve Replacement?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in United Arab Emirates ($6,849), Thailand ($7,095), India ($7,248), out of 8 countries we compare.
How long will I stay in hospital for Heart Valve Replacement?
Most patients spend about 10 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 60 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
Mechanical or tissue valve?
Mechanical valves last very long but need lifelong warfarin. Tissue valves need less blood thinning but may wear out, sometimes in 10 to 20 years. Age and plans guide the choice.
What is INR?
It is a blood test that measures how thin your blood is on warfarin. Your doctor adjusts your dose to keep it in range.
Do I need antibiotics for dental work?
Usually yes, since artificial valves are at higher risk of infection. Tell your dentist and doctor.
Is valve repair better than replacement?
Where possible, repair, especially of the mitral valve, avoids a prosthesis. Your surgeon will explain if repair is possible.
