About TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement)
The valve is delivered on a catheter, normally through the femoral artery in the groin, and expanded within the diseased valve. A heart team reviews CT images beforehand to choose the access route and valve size. Balloon-expandable and self-expanding designs exist, and the procedure is commonly done with sedation rather than full anaesthesia.
Symptoms such as breathlessness and fatigue often improve quickly, and recovery is shorter than after open surgery. The result depends on your anatomy, how the valve sits, kidney and lung health, and the team's experience. Complications can include leaks beside the valve, stroke and a need for a pacemaker, and long-term durability is still being studied.
Expect a stay of a few days and a gradual return to normal activity over two to three weeks. Bring imaging and echo reports, plus a list of your medicines. At home, arrange cardiology follow-up with an echocardiogram, and make sure you know which blood-thinning medicine to take and for how long.
Usually a good fit if
- Severe symptomatic aortic stenosis in older adults, usually those above about 75.
- Patients judged high or intermediate risk for open surgery by the heart team.
- Frailty, previous chest surgery or other illness that makes open surgery less safe.
May need to wait if
- Active endocarditis or infection, which must be treated first.
- Anatomy such as very small leg arteries or a bicuspid valve that may favour open surgery.
- Younger, low-risk patients where long-term valve durability argues for surgery.
How to prepare
- Bring your echo, CT scans, angiogram and medication list; a CT of the aorta and leg arteries is usually needed.
- Expect blood tests, kidney function and a dental check to remove infection risks.
- Ask your cardiologist about blood thinners and diabetes tablets; only change them on their instruction.
- Mention any contrast allergy or kidney disease before CT and the procedure.
- Plan to stay near the hospital for a few days and arrange a companion for the flight home.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Has a heart team assessed whether TAVR or open surgery is better for me?
- Which valve type will you use, and how long is it expected to last?
- How many TAVRs do you perform each year, and is cardiac surgery on site?
- What is my risk of needing a pacemaker, and how will my rhythm be monitored?
- Which blood thinners will I need afterwards, and for how long?
- What follow-up scans do you advise, and who can do them at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No heart team decision documented, or cardiac surgery not available on site.
- No CT scan of the aorta and access arteries before the procedure.
- TAVR promised for a young, low-risk patient with no discussion of valve durability.
- Surgeon cannot state their yearly TAVR volume.
Questions about TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) abroad
Which country is cheapest for TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement)?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($24,675), Thailand ($30,675), Turkey ($33,583), out of 9 countries we compare.
How long will I stay in hospital for TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement)?
Most patients spend about 4 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 21 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
Does TAVR need open-heart surgery?
No. The valve is delivered through a catheter, usually from the groin. Rarely, another route is used or surgery is needed if a complication arises.
Will I need a pacemaker?
A minority of patients need one because the new valve can press on the heart's electrical system. This is monitored closely in hospital.
How durable is a TAVR valve?
Durability data is reassuring for the first years but long-term data is still growing, which is why surgery is preferred in younger patients.
