About Gynecomastia Surgery
Surgery may use liposuction for fatty enlargement, direct removal of the gland through a small cut at the edge of the areola, or both. Larger cases with loose skin may need skin removal. It is done under local or general anaesthesia. Doctors usually first check for treatable causes such as medicines or hormone problems.
Most men notice a flatter chest and more confidence. Results depend on the mix of gland and fat, skin elasticity and the surgeon's technique. Complications may include a contour irregularity, fluid collection or altered nipple sensation. Weight gain or certain medicines can cause enlargement to return.
Many men go home the same day and return to desk work within about a week. A compression vest is worn for several weeks, and heavy lifting is avoided for about three to four weeks. Bring a list of your medicines and any hormone test results, and arrange a follow-up review to check healing.
Usually a good fit if
- Persistent enlarged male breasts for more than a year, with no reversible cause.
- Embarrassment or discomfort affecting daily life or exercise.
- Good general health and stable weight.
May need to wait if
- Obesity that would improve with weight loss alone, and ongoing steroid or drug use.
- Recent onset breast enlargement, which should be assessed to rule out other causes.
- A breast lump, pain or discharge that needs medical investigation before surgery.
How to prepare
- Have a medical assessment for causes such as hormones, medicines, steroids or liver and thyroid disease; blood tests may be advised.
- Stop taking anabolic steroids or recreational drugs as your doctor advises; review all medicines with your doctor.
- Review blood thinners, aspirin and supplements with your doctor; change nothing without their instruction.
- Maintain a stable weight and plan a break from heavy chest exercise.
- Buy a compression vest and arrange a week of rest.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is my enlargement fat, gland or both, and what technique do you recommend?
- Will I have skin removal and longer scars?
- How do you avoid a dent or saucer deformity?
- How many gynecomastia procedures do you do each year?
- Will the removed tissue be tested?
- What compression and activity limits will I need?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No exam or tests to find a cause before surgery.
- Liposuction only for firm glandular tissue.
- Promising no scars with loose skin.
- No testing of removed tissue.
