About Embryo Freezing (Vitrification)
After an IVF cycle, selected embryos are treated with cryoprotectant solutions and then cooled almost instantly in liquid nitrogen, which prevents damaging ice crystals from forming. This is called vitrification. The embryos are stored in labelled tanks, and no further medicine is needed for the freezing itself. It is the same process used for 'freeze-all' cycles, in which no fresh transfer is performed.
Most embryos survive thawing when frozen by vitrification, and pregnancy rates from frozen embryo transfers are comparable with fresh transfers. The result depends mainly on the embryo's quality and the age of the woman who produced the eggs, not on how long they are stored. Storage limits, fees and consent rules vary between countries and should be understood in advance.
Freezing itself needs no extra stay beyond the IVF cycle. Plan the storage contract carefully, including how long embryos can remain, who consents to their use and what happens if circumstances change. Keep copies of the embryo records and grading, since you may transfer them to a clinic at home later.
Usually a good fit if
- Spare good-quality embryos after a fresh IVF cycle.
- Risk of ovarian hyperstimulation, so transfer is delayed.
- Preimplantation genetic testing while results are awaited.
- Fertility preservation before treatments such as chemotherapy.
May need to wait if
- Poor-quality embryos unlikely to survive thawing.
- Unresolved consent or legal questions about the embryos.
- Lack of a clear plan for storage and future transfer.
- Unclear storage arrangements or absent contact details.
How to prepare
- Discuss how many embryos to freeze and ask how they are graded and labelled.
- Confirm consent forms, storage duration and rules about unused embryos, including legal requirements in your home country.
- Complete infection screening for both partners if required by the clinic.
- Ask about export or transport procedures if embryos might be moved.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- How do you grade embryos before freezing?
- Will you freeze at day 3 or blastocyst stage?
- What are the survival rates for thawed embryos in your lab?
- How are embryos stored, backed up and tracked?
- What happens to embryos if I stop paying or cannot be reached?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Embryos are slow frozen without explanation.
- No written storage and consent forms.
- The lab cannot say its thaw survival rate.
- No backup storage or monitoring of tanks.
