About E.max Crown
The dentist shapes the tooth, takes a digital or physical impression, and a crown is milled or pressed from an E.max block. A temporary crown is worn while it is made, or a same-day system is used. The final crown is bonded or cemented in place and adjusted for bite and colour.
E.max crowns are strong enough for front teeth and premolars, and they match natural enamel well. Results depend on the amount of tooth remains, the bite forces, the dentist's preparation and your oral hygiene. Heavy grinders and back molars may do better with zirconia, and any crown can chip or loosen.
Treatment usually takes two visits a few days apart, or one visit with same-day milling. Plan three to seven days near the clinic and ask for the crown to be checked before you leave. Bring your dental records and agree who will review it at home if it feels high or loose.
Usually a good fit if
- You have a broken, heavily filled or root-treated tooth needing cover.
- You want a natural, metal-free look, especially for front teeth.
- Your remaining tooth structure is enough to support a crown.
- Your gums are healthy.
May need to wait if
- Heavy grinding without a night guard, especially for back teeth.
- Insufficient tooth structure to hold the crown.
- Active decay or gum disease.
- Allergy or sensitivity to the cements or materials used.
How to prepare
- Have X-rays and a check for decay or gum disease, and complete root canal treatment first if the tooth needs it.
- Tell your dentist about teeth grinding or clenching, as a night guard may be advised.
- Bring photos or discuss the shade you want.
- Avoid very hard or sticky foods on the temporary crown.
- Plan a stay of a few days if the crown is made in a laboratory.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is E.max suitable for this tooth, or is zirconia stronger for my bite?
- Is the crown made in the clinic or in a laboratory?
- What amount of tooth will you remove?
- How long will the crown last, and what is the warranty?
- Will I need a night guard?
- Who can adjust or replace it at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No X-rays or assessment of the tooth.
- Heavy tooth reduction for no stated reason.
- No bite check or night guard advice.
- No information on the ceramic brand.
