About Donor Sperm IVF

The woman takes hormone injections to stimulate her ovaries, and eggs are collected under sedation. They are fertilised with donor sperm, either by standard insemination or by injecting a single sperm into each egg (ICSI). Embryos are cultured for several days, and one is transferred to the womb, with spares frozen. Donor sperm may be fresh or frozen and has been screened for infection and genetic conditions.

Success depends mostly on the age of the woman providing the eggs, her ovarian reserve, embryo quality and the womb. Using donor sperm with younger, healthy eggs gives good chances per cycle, whereas older age lowers them. Some people need more than one cycle. Ovarian overstimulation is a recognised risk that doctors monitor for.

Expect around two to three weeks away for stimulation, egg collection and transfer, with a pregnancy blood test about two weeks later. Check donor registry rules, anonymity and legal parentage in your home country. Bring hormone tests, scans and screening results, and arrange early pregnancy scans locally.

Usually a good fit if

  • Severe male-factor infertility or no sperm.
  • Genetic conditions in the male partner.
  • Single women or same-sex couples seeking pregnancy.
  • Adequate ovarian reserve and a healthy womb.

May need to wait if

  • Very low ovarian reserve, where egg donation may be discussed.
  • Uterine or tubal problems needing treatment first.
  • Medical conditions that make pregnancy unsafe.
  • Unresolved legal or ethical issues about donor sperm.
How to prepare
  1. Have ovarian reserve tests, ultrasound and infection screening, plus counselling.
  2. Tell the team about medicines and medical conditions; any change is on your doctor's instruction.
  3. Check legal rules for donor sperm in your destination and home country before travelling.
  4. Plan timing for stimulation, egg collection and transfer.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. How is donor sperm screened and stored?
  2. Is IVF needed or could insemination (IUI) work first?
  3. How many embryos will be transferred?
  4. What is the legal framework for donor-conceived children?
  5. What medicines will I take and how will I be monitored?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Donor sperm is not screened or quarantined.
  • No explanation of IUI as an alternative.
  • Several embryos are routinely transferred.
  • No counselling or consent process.
