About Composite Veneers

The dentist cleans the tooth, roughens the surface slightly, and builds the resin in layers before shaping and polishing. Often little or no enamel is removed, and treatment is finished in one visit, sometimes using a digital smile design first. Unlike porcelain, composite can be repaired chairside.

Teeth look more even straight away. Composite is less durable than porcelain, tends to stain and chip over time, and typically lasts several years before polishing or repair. Results depend heavily on the dentist's artistry, your bite, and habits such as grinding, nail biting and heavy tea, coffee or smoking.

The treatment usually takes one to three days, so this is easy to fit into a short stay. Avoid biting hard foods and staining drinks for the first couple of days, and ask for care advice on polishing. Arrange for a local dentist to maintain the veneers, and keep records of the shade used.

Usually a good fit if

  • You have small chips, minor gaps or mild discolouration.
  • Your teeth and gums are healthy.
  • You want a lower-commitment alternative to porcelain.
  • You will accept polishing and occasional repair.

May need to wait if

  • Heavy teeth grinding that you will not manage with a guard.
  • Significant crowding or bite problems that need orthodontics.
  • Active decay or gum disease.
  • Expecting a lifetime solution without maintenance.
How to prepare
  1. Have a dental check-up to treat decay and gum disease before veneers are placed.
  2. Bring photos of the smile you want, and expect a mock-up or digital design.
  3. Tell your dentist about teeth grinding, as you may need a night guard.
  4. Have your teeth cleaned and any whitening done before choosing the shade.
  5. Ask about maintenance, since composite can stain and chip.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Will you use freehand bonding or a mock-up guide?
  2. What portion of my enamel, if any, will you remove?
  3. How long do composite veneers last, and how are they repaired?
  4. How will I prevent staining?
  5. Do I need a night guard?
  6. Can my dentist at home repair or polish them?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • No mock-up or discussion of the final shape.
  • Heavy drilling of healthy teeth for composite.
  • No advice on maintenance or night guards.
  • Claims that they last as long as porcelain.
