About Buccal Fat Removal

Under local anaesthesia, with or without sedation, the surgeon makes a small cut inside the mouth, gently draws out the buccal fat pad and removes part of it. There are no external scars. The operation is quick, often under an hour, and is sometimes combined with other facial contouring.

Swelling hides the result for several weeks, and the final contour appears after a few months. Results depend on your bone structure, the fat you have and the amount removed. Removing too much can leave a hollow look as the face ages, so a conservative approach is usual, and the change is permanent.

Most people go home the same day and can fly within a day or two. Eat soft foods for about a week and rinse your mouth gently after meals as directed. Arrange pain relief and ice packs, bring front and side photos, and schedule a review to check healing inside the mouth.

Usually a good fit if

  • Round or full lower cheeks caused by prominent buccal fat pads.
  • Good skin tone and facial structure, usually adults in their twenties or thirties.
  • Realistic expectations that it slims the face modestly.

May need to wait if

  • Already narrow, thin or ageing faces, where removal can look hollow.
  • Active mouth infection or uncontrolled medical conditions.
  • Facial fullness due to weight, muscle or bone instead of fat.
How to prepare
  1. Show the surgeon photos of your face and discuss what you want to change; not all round cheeks are due to buccal fat.
  2. Brush well and have any dental issues treated beforehand.
  3. Review blood thinners, aspirin and supplements with your doctor; change them only on their instruction.
  4. Plan soft foods, a straw and mouth rinses for the first week.
  5. Avoid smoking during recovery, as this delays healing in the mouth.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Is my cheek fullness due to buccal fat, and is removal appropriate at my age?
  2. What amount of fat will you remove, and how will you avoid a hollow look?
  3. What is the risk to the facial nerve or salivary duct?
  4. How many buccal fat procedures do you perform each year?
  5. What diet and mouth care will I need?
  6. Can the result be corrected if too much is removed?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Offering removal to people with thin or ageing faces without warning about hollowing.
  • No facial exam or discussion of long-term appearance.
  • Packages that include no aftercare.
  • Promise of a dramatic jawline change.

Questions about Buccal Fat Removal abroad

Which country is cheapest for Buccal Fat Removal?

The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($3,393), Thailand ($4,255), Turkey ($4,698), out of 9 countries we compare.

Will it make my face too thin later?

Buccal fat naturally decreases with age, so removal can make cheeks look hollow later. This is why careful selection and conservative removal matter.

Is it reversible?

Removed fat does not return. Fillers or fat grafting can help if the cheeks look hollow.

When will I see the result?

A slimmer look appears over several weeks as swelling settles, with the final contour at about three months.
