About Brachioplasty (Arm Lift)

Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon removes a strip of skin and fat, usually along the inner arm from the elbow to the armpit, and closes it carefully. For smaller amounts of loose skin, liposuction alone or a shorter scar in the armpit may be enough. The operation takes about two hours.

The arms look slimmer and smoother, but the scar along the inner arm is permanent, though it fades with time. Results depend on skin elasticity, stable weight, scar healing and surgical technique. Possible problems include numbness, fluid collections and wide scars, so choosing an experienced surgeon is worthwhile.

You can often go home the same day or the next, and most people travel after about one to two weeks. Avoid lifting or raising the arms above shoulder height for a few weeks, and wear the compression sleeves provided. Bring photos and arrange someone to help at home, plus a follow-up appointment for stitches and scar care.

Usually a good fit if

  • Hanging upper arm skin with limited fat after weight loss or ageing.
  • Stable weight and good skin quality.
  • Willingness to accept a long scar on the inner or back arm.

May need to wait if

  • Ongoing weight loss or planned major weight change.
  • Smoking or poor wound healing, and lymphoedema or poor circulation in the arm.
  • Unrealistic expectations about scar visibility.
How to prepare
  1. Maintain a stable weight and show the surgeon any previous scarring or arm swelling (lymphoedema).
  2. Stop smoking and nicotine, and review blood thinners and supplements with your doctor; change nothing without their instruction.
  3. Arrange help for dressing, washing hair and daily tasks for about a week.
  4. Buy loose, front-opening tops; sleeves will be bandaged or compressed.
  5. Plan a short stay near the clinic, and avoid heavy luggage for the flight home.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Which scar pattern do you recommend for my arms and how long will it be?
  2. Will you combine liposuction with the lift?
  3. How do you reduce the risk of scar widening and nerve numbness?
  4. How many arm lifts do you do each year?
  5. What limits will there be on lifting and raising my arms?
  6. What can be revised if the scar heals poorly?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Promises of an invisible scar.
  • No discussion of nerve or lymphatic risks.
  • No pre-operative marking while standing and arms raised.
  • Package with no aftercare or revision policy.
