About All-on-4 Dental Implants
Two front implants are placed upright and two back implants are angled, which allows longer implants and often avoids bone grafting. A scan and digital planning guide placement. A temporary fixed bridge is commonly attached soon after surgery, and a stronger permanent bridge, made of zirconia or acrylic with a metal frame, is fitted later.
Biting and appearance improve substantially, and success rates are high when bone is adequate and the patient keeps clean. Outcomes depend on bone volume, bite forces, smoking, diabetes control and the dentist's experience. Heavy grinders may need a night guard, and screws or acrylic parts may need maintenance over the years.
The healing phase takes about three to six months before the permanent bridge, so plan two visits. Stay close for review in the first week, and eat soft food for the early weeks. Bring previous X-rays and agree who will see you for check-ups at home.
Usually a good fit if
- You have lost most teeth or have failing teeth in one or both arches.
- Your jaw bone is adequate, or can be supported by angled implants.
- You want a fixed rather than removable solution.
- You are generally healthy and maintain oral hygiene.
May need to wait if
- Uncontrolled diabetes or other conditions that slow healing.
- Smoking that you cannot reduce.
- Previous radiotherapy to the jaw or certain bone medicines, until cleared.
- Active infection or gum disease that is untreated.
How to prepare
- Arrange a CBCT or panoramic X-ray and bring previous dental records.
- Review blood thinners, osteoporosis medicines, diabetes treatment and other medicines with your doctor and dentist.
- Stop smoking as advised, and treat gum disease before surgery.
- Plan your stay so you can attend early reviews, and prepare soft foods.
- Ask about the final bridge schedule and a possible second trip.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is All-on-4 the best option for my jaw compared with more implants?
- What implant brand and bridge material will you use?
- Will you give me a temporary bridge on the day?
- How do you handle an implant that fails?
- What maintenance does the bridge need?
- Who can treat it at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Offering the treatment without a 3D scan.
- No details of implant brand or warranty documents.
- Promising a same-day permanent bridge as final.
- No maintenance or review schedule.
